Why line a cooler?

I have seen the pictures of various coolers, ammo boxes, and other containers converted to humidors that some people put Spanish cedar lining in them. Why? If you are storing boxes of cigars, and the boxes are presumably Spanish cedar, then why add the lining too?

Boxes arent typically constructed from Spanish cedar.

Lining with cedar improves the stability and distribution of humidity as well supplying debatable aromatic properties

I like the way it smells when I crack the lid open on my Humidor or Coolerdor, that I have one interior wall lined with a think sheet of spanish cedar. As well as quite a few of the little blocks that come in some cigar boxes. I'm planning to attach some to the other 3 walls but need to find some large boxes to break apart. Don't wanna bust up my smaller nice ones.

I don't and never have. All cigars in the coolers are in boxes and there's no reason to line with anything other than aesthetics and aeromatics. If your cooler isn't full, it could help the Rh stability.

I debox most of my sticks, so I keep the thin cedar seperators for their debatable aromatic quality. I use them to seperate the different types of cigars. Cedar trays would work better and they are on my list along with many other things I have learned here but don't have the money for.:D

Like most people said, it's for the humidity and the smell. But it also looks cool if you like showing off a big plastic box.

Besides the nice smell, the cedar help to control humidity. I would say if you are using a cooler and stacking boxes or trays inside, there is no need to line. If for instance you were just stack sticks a foot deep in the cooler, you'd want cedar lining.

Smoky has a killer ammo box as a humidor. He has lined it with cedar and puts the sticks right in there. I would say lining in his application was a necessity

Even if you can't fill you cooler yet, it is a good idea to fill the space with empty boxes until the volume is full. Having a full space, whether cooler, box, or fridge helps hold and stabalize the RH.

:tpd: although I have seen some cool looking Cooler projects here, I'm more concerned with storage space, proper RH, and air circulation than aesthetics and I mainly store boxes in my Cooler. Whatever floats your boat though :ss

I stood my cooler upright and added three spanisd cedar shelves, I also put a bag of cedar shavings that came of my plainer from making the shelves. I know it helps controll the humidity, but I really love the smell of the cedar when you open the cooler.

Lining may be a little overboard but it sure looks and smells nice . As others have stated , it will help stabilize the RH . Mine isn't lined but I do have a Spanish cedar rack in the bottom of mine to elevate the boxes to promote air circulation . I also have a few Spanish cedar trays with singles in them . I generally keep my stogies in the box they came in , inside the cooler . I also have 2 oust fans running now , used to have a PC fan that I rigged up with an old power pack and a light timer but the cord meant it had to be near an outlet . :ss

Absolutely NO reason what so ever.....purely asthetics. I have several coolers all full of boxes and all keep their humidity without any problem and smell devine

Wait...doesn't having spanish cedar in your humidificated environment help to prevent mold from growing too?

either be it from trays or boxes or lining, some spanish cedar is necessary.

The properites of SC prevent itself from molding or decaying, not everything else it is near. It acts as a humidity stablizer and impart favorable flavors and odors.
