Wine chilller vs Coolidor

I found a local lumber yard that has spanish cedar, I had the them plane the board down to a 1/2", I cut them to size and just slid them in the slots that are molded into the cooler. Shelves are nice and snug no glue or support needed.

sounds nice, no local spots by me that sell spanish cedar only the closet type of cedar locally. I ended up getting trays but I was just curious

There are also a large number of people who have never had them, despite the high temps. I can attest to I have had my smokes at 78-80 degrees for 5-6 years and never saw a beetle. (thanks, now that I say that, I'll get a ton. :r)

Pays your money = takes your chances.

I thought the same way too until a recent outbreak (due, I'm almost positive, to a trade) changed my thinking. I used to store at 67 degrees. Not any more.

Yikes. Hope it was contained. What do you store your stuff at now?

Not entirely true, see Mindflux's post. Aftermarket controllers help dial in the temp nicely, and one such as this can hang easily on the outside of the fridge and to the job nicely: http://www.midwestsupplies.com/products/ProdByID.aspx?ProdID=4230

Since the original poster is in Florida, I'd caution to think seriously about any temperature spikes in the house during the summer, and buy accordingly. No sense in investing in a nice cigar collection if you're going to run the risk of hatching beetles due to having temps that get up into the upper 70s and 80s in the humi's environment.

That's really cool. I've never seen that before.

I guess I see more of the commercial side.

spiffy

Go with the wine cooler. You can find great deal on ebay or appliance stores when they get in new models. Got mine this way, paid $99 for a 40+ capacity model. They look great, so you can put them anywhere and are great from an organizational standpoint. I have beads in mine and have stayed at 70 degrees since last winter, this is without having to ever use the compressor (I keep mine in the lower lever). Try one...you can't go wrong!

Good Luck,
Shawn:ss

Not higher than 65 degrees; as soon as I can get the RH down to a reasonable level, I'll drop the temp down to 62.

Caught it in time and I don't think I'll lose any stock. Everything is being frozen right now. All future deposits in the aristocrat will get frozen first as well. This whole episode blew chunks, let me tell you...

Glad to hear about no losses. Sorry that you have to go through it though.

Are you freezing at home? I thought household freezers couldn't get cold enough for 100% kill?

You're balking over 200 dollars when your collection sitting inside of them is potentially worth thousands? :r I buy boxes of rolled up TOBACCO that cost more than wine coolers.

Well put, Mindflux

Another vote for wine chiller here, but I live in Sunny S.C. (that's South Carolina) where it costs a TON of money to run an AC and keep the house at 70 degrees, a.k.a. the 'beetle safe' temp range.

A compressor-driven unit will most certainly require an external controller.

I look at a wine cooler as a good long term investment. Yeah, it might cost you some loot at the start, but you will be thankful you got it in the end. I'm sure the coolidors work great as well, but I like temp control at my fingertips, not to mention I use a CO, just can't go wrong IMHO. :tu

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

I thought companies flash freezed the smokes? My smoke have been subject to some odd hgh temps 75 and no signs yet. I dunno.

I wish I knew where all you guys were getting these killer deals on a wine chiller. The lowest I have been able to find is like $99 for a 12 holder. To me that is not big enough.

Argghh, now it seems I am getting more confused. LOL, Unfortunately I need one kind of quick too. I can't really wait for one to go on sale.

Thanks for all the good discussion. :tu

I've got a Vinotemp 28-bottle wine fridge. All I did was plug the bottom hole, add 65% Heartfelt beads, and a Cigar Oasis. The temperature stays between 68-69 degrees and the humidity is about 65-66%. I didn't need a controller either. The only problem is that I need another one since this one is full already.
