Yay for plume!

I am going to take a guess at this and you guys can tell me what you think. As the cigar continues to ferment gases are release in to the cellophane. These gases build up in the cellophane until they have nowhere else to go but out of the opening. The gas leaves plume or residue on the cello? This is just me guesing and is actually based on nothing that I have ever seen or heard.

Here's my take on the situation...

1) Plume does not contribute to the taste of the cigar.

2) Plume can also be 3 dimensional fuzz that's very thin and light and looks crystalline in nature. It generally coats/dusts the cigar. Thus the confusion between whitish colored mold and plume.

3) Plume does not necessarily indicate a well aged cigar. If conditions are right, plume can occur within a year or two (same with mold). I've personally had plume appear just under a year on some oily CAO's and other cigars. I've also experienced mold on other cigars so I've been around both.

Quite honestly, it's hard to say whether the picture shows plume or mold. It may show both but plume does not appear on the plastic. It generally crystalizes on the cigar itself. One way to know for sure is if it's in the foot of the cigar, it's mold. Either way, if it isn't in the foot of the cigar brush it off and enjoy the yellow cello'd cigars :tu
Hope this helps!

After reading some of these posts discussing mold I decided to go through my cooladar and check my cigars, and soon after began the worst day of my cigar smoking life. I found mold on a bunch of my cigars. I had so many cigars with mold on them it almost made me cry. I had to throw away some of my Padron 64's, Anejo sharks, 1 of my God of Fire Carlito's, and a hand full of others. Are there any BOTL out there that can help me prevent another heart breaking day like today? How can I keep the mold from coming back?

If the mold did not invade the foot of the cigar they are fine. Just brush them off. As for mold control, what level of humidity do you keep your humidor?

Very easy, just keep the relative humidity between 60-70 % and you will be fine! Also, try to keep your cigars at a stable temperature and preferably a little lower than room temperature!

An investment in a few pounds of 65% RH Humibeads from Heartfelt Industries really is the best guarantee to avoid RH-related problems!

Why did you throw your cigars away? Was it green mold? Cigars infested with white mold are ok to smoke but a sign of improper storage!

Regarding the original post about the "plume" on the cellophane, I think the risk is big that what is acually deposited on the inside of the film is mold spores!

I saved some of the cigars that did not get to moldy, and the humidity was kept at 70%. I keep my humidors in a 150 gallon ice chest in my closet to controll the temp, and they stay at 65 degrees. Where can I get some of the 65% beads, because I am thinking I would rather lower the humidity rather than find moldy cigars again.

I picked up some Don Lino Colorados from the same place.

Smoked, you have some kind of secret B&M you're shopping from? Looks like he takes you in the back room or basement to "see my sweet babies". You're finding some Gotham Cigar Museum-looking sticks there. That's really neat!

Did technodaddy ever try his smoke? Inquiring minds want to know! :ss

The funny thing is that these are discounted because they don't carry them anymore. I think that I am the only person that buys them. I am going to smoke one of these tonight. I will let you guys know how they taste. What did happen to that damned tchnodaddy? I wonder if he ever smoked that thing.

I just lit up the Don Lino and it's fantastic. I am going to have to pick up more of these to send out to folks.
