You never forget your 1st 'X'

I Have Plugged Dip 4's
Having 'discovered' the joy of smoking real cigars only about a month ago, and being even greener to this forum, this experience might seem mundane to some of you, but I have to share it. Having seen/read about a lot of you through past post I can only envy some of your experiences.... but I'll get there eventually. It's fascinating to me how so many different cigars can each have their own signature and distinct flavors. Every one of them I try is a whole new (1st time) experience to me, so pardon my enthusiasm. I've been looking at this one for a week now, and can't hold off any longer. Tonight I had my first OpusX. Here's my story...

I'm watching my beloved Dolphins tonight, playing at Carolina. I know its only pre-season, but I tell myself as soon as the Dolphins score a TD I'm lighting this puppy (delayed gratification, sort of). Third quarter, finally, Harrington to Chambers... TD!! Opus time. I'm mostly a beer, Jack, or Captain kind of guy, but tonight I felt like something sweet. Hmm, Drambuie on the rocks sounds good. Take my drink and my X and off to my back porch. It rained today, but tonight its real clear, no wind, and real peaceful outside. Perfect night.

I smell it, the aroma stands out, over anything else I have. I cut the tip, take a pre-lit draw. Kind of salty, but nice and very easy. I take a sip of my drink, sweet, cold, smooth. I light it. Perfect light, not one spot unlit. Take my first draw.............. heaven. I wondered if everything I had read about this was just 'yadda-yadda-yadda' or was there more to it. Well now I can say it's real. This was unbelievable. Perfect draw, perfect burn, perfect construction, and taste.... oh my God. I found it sort of had a creamy sweetness, with some light pepper and even a bit of citrus, which surprised me, but tasted fantastic. For me, a remarkable experience. I'm sure many of you have had that several times.... again I envy you, but I'll get there. This was my first like it.

Half way into my cigar, my wife comes out and tries to start a conversation. I forego trying to explain this 'nirvana' her, and ask her to just sit with me, without talking. Amazingly, she does. My sweetheart cuddles up next to me quietly, and justs sits with me, enjoying the peaceful night. And me with my 'X'. I think I can even hear Louie Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" playing in the background.

And they lived happily ever after... The End.

Peace

ps I don't know how the Dolphin game ended..... and I don't care.

Sounds like a good time!!!!!!! I've been curious about the X for some time. Gonna have to stop by my local shop Saturday (PAYDAY!!!) and pick one up.

wow, congrats, i've been smoking for 2 years now and have yet to smoke an OpusX...I need to find a B&M around here offering them, seem to sell out before I can get around to it, haha maybe need to sign a waiting list?

Nice review. Which X did you have? And how long did you have it before smoking it? Did you let it mellow in the humi?

The only reason I ask, is because I tried a few of these, (different sizes) and none of them really blew my socks off.

Others on this board have told me that you have to let an X age for a while to really enjoy it. Do you agree? Thanks.

Great post man. I love your description. I wish I had your talent at writing. You describe our hobby with the utmost detail. I am glad to hear you enjoyed the 'X' tonight with your wife.

I had the short one, XXX, 4 5/8 x 49. I've only had my humidor for about a week, so it didn't last too long with me, but I was told it had been aged a while before I got it.

Well HarryCulo I'm happy that it turned out so well for you - but I'm like Mr.M - every single one that I have tried has really sucked. I really want to like them, but alas they don't seem to want me to.

Enjoyed the story!

I had my first one the other night it sat in my humi for about a year. It was excellent. Now if I can ever find another one. Really hard to find around here.

Great review.

Someday I'll find one of them, I just hope it will be worth the wait and search.

I went to the B&M today and asked if they had any.

The guy just laughed. I guess that meant no.

Ahh, Opus. Great review! I could almost taste the smoke now! I kept saying to my self that I'm gonna wait a short time and have my first "X" when the time is right. I have an Opus robusto sitting in my humi with 4 more months of age on it just staring at me whenever I open it up to "check" on the other sticks in the box. It keeps calling to me... who knows, it may find it's way out of my humi this weekend...:D

My first Opus X was truly a nice cigar, very complex and flavorfull. I have probably smoked another 5 or so since then, and none of them even came close to the first, even though the subsequent ones had much more age on them. I quite prefer the Anejos at this point, never had a bad one.

one of the purely true statements that i have found on this board is this "you have to try it and see...everyone has their own likes and dislikes." my first X was one i purchased and was sitting in the humi for about 3 months and i smoked it a few nights ago and i have to say that i was hightly disappointed. however i have recently received another in a PIF this will be the one that determines if i ever have one again.

If you've only been smoking cigars for a month, and you had this kind of experience with the "Power Ranger," my prediction is that you're going... going.. gone!

I had a No. 5 last weekend and it sent me to the moon. You people look very small from up there.

Thanks for the story, Harry. Keep em coming!

That's better than my first, it was terrible, put it out half way through, lit it up the next day and it was great. I have only smoked two since then, the super belicoso( hmmm, heaven) I have a Perfection #5 that has been chillin for a year that will be smoked tonight. Everyone says after a year that they are perfect. I'll report back and let you know. It's going to be one of my bday smokes.

I've only smoked one Opus X so far which was a really good smoke. However, I've had three Anejos all of which were superb and as good as the others.

Dude,
Great user name.:r

For those needing some translation, there was a rap hit song in Spanish that described it best.

Esa muchacha esta bien bonita, tiene tremendo, CULO!

Now there ya go - Anejos - never had a bad one, love those! I would trade an X for an Anejos anyday of the week.
