A Thompson Cigar Experience

Smoked

Rodent Muncher
So a really good friend of mine asked me about buying cigars online. I gave him some sites to go to but I forgot to warn him about the infamous Thompson Cigar company.

He tells me a week later that he got a great deals on some cigars at a place called Thompson Cigar. My response: "Ahhhh F***!, I forgot to warn you". So his new cigars arrive and they shipped him two boxes instead of one. Yes, they charged him for it. He says screw it and keeps the box.

About one month later another box of cigars arrives that he never ordered. At this point he is pretty pissed and asks his wife to call and sort it out while he is at work. She calls them up and they tell her that her husband called them and signed up for the "Cigar Club".

Not only did he not sign up for the "Cigar Club" but he never even spoke to them on the phone. They probably saw that he kept the first box of cigars that he never ordered and put him on a list of victims. In the end we both ended up cracking up about it. It must be nice to dictate your own sales like that.

Poor guy he got sucked into the Thompson lies.Tell him to sever all ties now before it's too late & to call his credit card company & put a merchant block on them so they can't charge his credit card anymore.:hn

thompson just gets more and more ridiculous...you think they could max out on being awful, but then they go and do something absurd like this...

I tried them once, always will to give someone a chance. Besides from the poor service, no package tracking, no updates on your order at their site, miserable packaging a barrage of phone calls wanting you to purchase more and a two week delivery time at twice the price of anyone else, they are fine...:D

I got lucky and haven't ordered from them. When I was new, I found their site and almost bought one of those humidor, house brand cigar combos. Luckily I decided not to buy a humidor full of cigars, as then I wouldn't have space for the other stuff I ordered.

I seem to have really dodged a bullet there!!

I'm the exception that proves the rule when it comes to customer service and Thompson. I ordered some of the "customize your own band" cigars a couple of years ago and my order came as it was supposed to and the cigars weren't as bad as some I've had. Encouraged by this, I ordered one of their deals and it came on time and nothing was damaged.

So from customer service standpoint, I must be an exception.

DO NOT BUY THEIR HOUSE BRANDS. Of the ones I received, NONE of them were worth the money spent. Like I said, the ones they placed my custom band on were okay yard gars, but the ones they package and put their own label on like the Paso Doble were worthless except for taking them apart and spreading them in around my wife's rose bush.

I made the nOOb mistake of getting involved with Thompson, but I've learned from that experience and I don't answer the phone when they call.

Now C-bid is my downfall thanks to this site :ss

here's my question, though- the cigar community seems to hate thompson pretty uniformly, so why are they still in business? how do they make any money (besides ripping off n00bs) when everyone despises them?

I think it's because Thompson does more advertising than any other cigar retailer I've seen, and people just don't realize there are better sites out there.

A coworker introduced me to Thompson. First couple of experiences was ok. Not so much anymore... They can't seem to sell me the same box of cigars for the same, advertised, price on a regular basis.

I'm actually having to call them today in hopes of sorting out a billing issue. If it wasn't for the fact that they charged me 2x the amount for the boxes they are advertising I'd just pay the bill and hope I never hear from them again.

Rob, Run as far from them as you can, once you get the billing sorted out, of course. Have you got anything from the devil site yet?

:ss

They advertise in numerous magazines. The typical Thompson ad draws you in a deal too good to be true, usually a bunch of great looking (to the untrained eye) "premium" cigars in a free humidor for a ridiculously low price. I've seen their ads in Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, PC Magazine, and PC World just to name a few.

I was told to avoid Thompson’s but was told they have pretty good humidors.
I took a look at there humidors and figured that I should get some cigars also. Picked out a couple of premium samplers and placed my order. When my boxes started arriving I had an extra one, a humidor that I did not order. My wife called there customer service to complain they told her that I had ordered it. The wife removed me from there mailing list. I kept the humidor and gave it to my step dad for a father’s day gift.

I see there adds in magazines alot to, I bet they make alot during the holiday season from people giving gifts and not knowing any better. Also, not buying the tobacco in the cigars they make(at least I hope they don't pay for it as bad as their cigar reviews are) and not having someone actually blend the cigars cuts down on alot of overhead I'm guessing.
