Air purifier/filter

I'm a bit skeptical about the performance. I have a Sharp Plasmacluster that does a good job but I've learned that nothing is going to work in a room that is smoked in daily. Exhausting the odors would be the first priority. Filtering helps but it won't do the job completely. The residual odors that can't be filtered quickly become apparent after a short while.

I looked around and found another site selling these and they had refurbished units. Their description of an XJ-3000C offered for sale:

Multi-Tech XJ-3000C Air Purifier
Condition: Units that Smell Like Smoke
Price: $69 w/Free Shipping
Out of Stock (Contact Us to Verify Availability)

These units have been briefly used in an environment where cigarettes have been smoked, but otherwise perform as good as new. There may be some minor marks on the exterior, but these units look good overall.
Includes: Filter Cartridge and UV Bulb, Free Shipping

My question is, if the UV bulb, ionizer and ozone is supposed to be effective at eliminating (or at least, drastically reducing) the smell of smoke, how could the unit itself smell like smoke? If the unit smells like smoke, isn't it safe to say that the room it was used in would also smell like smoke? I know that the HEPA filter will trap and absorb smoke particles and that could be the smoke smell they are describing, but it is mere inches away from the sanitizing portions of the unit. How effective will it be with curtains and fabrics that are 10 feet away?

That is a justified question. All I can tell you is that my biozone does work well but I do not smoke daily.

Fwiw, I tried the Ionic Breeze, my experience was the best thing about it was the money back part. For me it was totally useless. It can also be duplicated (same technology) if you must have one for about 1/8th the cost with other brands. There is no "there" there.
