Beatle ?

These two seem to be the only ones in the humidor with these holes. Should I put them in the freezer, what about the others in the humidor?

Thanks

Smoke' em before they do any more damage.I have smoked several beatle sticks & noticed no flavor change at all.The only thing you will notice is a little sizzle & popping.

Freeze 'em all. The reason you see the holes is b/c the beetles are adults and ate there way out of the cigar. Some of your other smokes could have beetles in younger stages of growth but you won't see any evidence. freeze 'em all.

What a nightmare! Freeze them all. I have read that the length of time that you have to freeze them depends on the temperature of your freezer.

i am just curious on a couple of things,
do you check your cigars often? and do you know what was the max temp your cigars where exposed to and for how long?

Homebrewer, my thought was the same as yours. When I saw the title I thought I might read that Ringo smokes Padrons or something.

Freeze your whole stock. I recommend 1 day fridge, 3-4days freezer (if deep freeze then 3 days if attached freezer 4 days) and then 1 day in the fridge and then take the cigars out and let them sit on the counter for 12 hours so that they warm to room temperature. I have had this problem with some of my sticks. That is why any incoming is frozen no matter what. If you want to know if the beetles are in any of your other sticks in thier adult phase then you can tap the foot on a piece of white paper. Beetle poop is uniform in size and colour.

Good luck:tu

Having had beatles three yes three dammit times in my sticks I say freeze them all take no chances.

As for smoking the beatle sticks............absolutely I smoked them all with no side effects other than sick satisfaction of knowing that if by chance there were still in there that I took em out :ss

(touch wood) I haven't had an outbreak yet. You can mitigate the risk of a serious oubreak by freezing them all. Most if not all posts about freezing agree that there is no noticable effect on taste so don't let that dissuade you from doing the right thing.
As for those two Partys... fire 'em up!

"Freeze em freeze em all" the cigars not the group/ Sorry. :2 This is why I freeze all my sticks when they come in

As a cigar smoker and the owner of a Beatles fan site (www.i-bfd.com), I can guarantee that you do NOT have BEATLES in your cigars. You may have beetles....but I've never had those in my humidor, so I wouldn't know anything about them.

And feel free to drop by my BEATLES website and read my article: "My Two Loves: The Beatles and Cigars". I think you will all enjoy it!

Ciao,

What the other guys said.

I have seen people suggest that a commercial deep freezer is needed to kill the beetles. I'm afraid that suggestion is wrong.

From the link above:

Items can be placed in the refrigerator or freezer (16 days at 36°F, 7 days at 25°F or 32°F for four to seven days) to kill all stages. Place items in a plastic bag to reduce condensation problems during thawing. Heating small quantities of infested material in an oven (190°F for one hour, 120°F for 16 to 24 hours) also is effective.

I use 1 day in fridge, 7 in home freezer, 1 in fridge. Double bagged cigars with air removed from bags. Home freezers are between 25-32F so this will work just fine.

I have found several beetle holes in cigars and saw a live adult once (over the years ... 4 different incidents). I have also found a live larva once when I dissected a Puros Indios for educational purposes (so that makes 5). I freeze anything that is not going directly into my humidor used for "will smoke soon"cigars.

You also need to clean out the humidor as well .. vacuum it out, place in direct sunlight a couple of days or wipe with alcohol or peroxide.

You can use liquid pectin and some wrapper from a junker cigar to cover the holes if you think they will interfere with smoking the affected cigars. I have used a finger to cover the hole before, appears to work OK.

Because you found multiple holes in multiple cigars you need to be extra diligent in taking care of this. A single beetle is not much of a concern ... a pair can result in a beetle party.
