Does anyone ever reflect how absurd this hobby is?

By far this hobby takes a lot less effort than many of my prior hobbies.

Think about how much time the computer takes; yet this forum would not happen if not for the blasted computers.

Think about skiing, how much money and time and effort is involved in just going up on the slopes once a season.

How about tennis, keeping the racket in shape and strung at the proper tension, not to mention the tennis shoes and gear.

How about biking, all that is involved with keeping the tires properly inflated, etc...

I could go on but as you can see there are no hobbies that are free of effort to make them and keep them just right.

You gotta love the cost of "Free" time. LOL:2

"We slave away to make money in life....to literally set on fire between our lips."

Hey, I'm just trying to smoke my money before the Gu'ment does it for me!
:ss:ss:ss

Disclaimer: This is reflecting on some wry humor I had today, not a rant.

We call this a hobby to relax and enjoy, and yet some of us spend hours beating ourselves up taking one for the team.
We say it's a social thing and that no good smoke is complete without company of some sort, yet so many of us would rather smoke alone oftentimes.
We say it's a personal reflective thing, and that enjoyment is exactly what you want out of it, yet some people toil furiously and always feel like there's no satisfaction till it's done.
We slave away to make money in life....to literally set on fire between our lips.
We bust our asses to find and protect good sources for whatever we want to smoke....only to give away the smokes or information to other brothers and sisters.
We read reviews, review and write about cigars, and always are trying something new....that we have no idea if we'll like or if it will taste like the dog rocket's rocket.
We sometimes travel great distances to smoke with someone, see something related to smoking, or to buy the smokes we want.
We (some of us) spend hours upon hours of time categorizing, organizing, and inventorying our smokes, only to have one crazed afternoon where all of that work flies out the window because a new box arrived and now we have to "play Tetris" with our stash again.

I'm sure everyone can add something to this list, but doesn't it strike any of you as odd exactly how much work goes into this hobby?

Strangely, I'd not give it up for the world....well maybe if the world threw in a box of good smokes I could be persuaded. :)

Below is the "Anecdote to decrease working morale" by Heinrich Boll, the famous German writer. They made us read that in seventh grade. I fully understood the importance of the concept right away and said to my teacher that she really shouldn't make us read that so early in life because it was going to spoil or entire career outlook. ;)
A TOURIST FOCUSES in on a most idyllic picture: a man in simple clothes dozing in a fishing boat that has been pulled out of the waves which come rolling up the sandy beach. The camera clicks, the fisherman awakens. The tourist offers him a cigarette and launches into a conversation: “The weather is great, there is plenty of fish, why are you lying around instead of going out and catching more?”
The fisherman replies: “Because I caught enough this morning.”
“But just imagine,” the tourist says, “you would go out there three or four times a day, bringing home three or four times as much fish! You know what could happen?” The fisherman shakes his head. “After about a year you could buy yourself a motor-boat,” says the tourist. “After two years you could buy a second one, and after three years you could have a cutter or two. And just think! One day you might be able to build a freezing plant or a smoke house, you might eventually even get your own helicopter for tracing shoals of fish and guiding your fleet of cutters, or you could acquire your own trucks to ship your fish to the capital, and then . . .”
“And then?” asks the fisherman.
“And then”, the tourist continues triumphantly, “you could be calmly sitting at the beachside, dozing in the sun and looking at the beautiful ocean!” The fisherman looks at the tourist: “But that is exactly what I was doing before you came along!”

Totally agree.

Thankfully, this is much less expensive than my other hobbies, although I rarely light fire to my high-end stereo equipment or sportscars...:ss

I have to agree this is a crazy hobby, but if it wasn't for my cigars I would just spend the maney and time on something else, so I might as well spend it on something that is enjoyable and can be shared with others.

We slave away to make money in life....to literally set on fire between our lips.

To me it's no different than spending on fine food and drink...that's essentially sticking money down your throat and :BS it a day later.

Life is absurd...I think I'll light one up and enjoy the absurdity! :ss

And I call this hobby silly not

I shoot a clay pigeons that will break when they hit the ground any way
I shot a targets to make holes in paper
I fish and waste gas to get to catch them and I don't catch them
I golf and loose balls in the woods
I do road rallies that cost to much and the entry fees suck
I race sailboats for a stupid flag
and I smoke cigars to get the perfect ash
I see no Problem at all with any of this
I am simply Insane:ss:ss:ss

I have noticed this too.:r I actually had an epiphany about 20 minutes ago. I went outside to watch a huge pecan stump (big as a car) burn that I started today. I took an Illusione ~68~ with me. Man, it was good. I was out for about half of the cigar. My wife comes out. After standing a minute, she starts picking at me, asking questions, etc. I absolutley noticed that the taste of the cigar changed as my peace and quiet went up in smoke. I love my wife dearly. I love having her around. But a man needs his time and space sometimes.
As for the other insanities or "work", you reap what you sow. If you put a lot in, you get a lot out. Well, except for the money. But, I don't know of any other hobby where you get a great return, unless you collect stocks. And there's no promises there. I'm going to check my RH and rearrange my coolerdor now. :D

I always liked the saying that "A legally owned machine gun is nothing but an expensive tool for converting money into noise"! :gn :chk :D

I think it's great that you can combine more than one hobby with enjoying a cigar. I have a cigar, now I can golf, fish ski or simply sit on my porch with a nice wine or whiskey.

Strange thing is, I'm sure there are many here with more than just this one hobby (err..obsession)... Wine, photography, coin collections, cars, artwork, knifes, exotic dancers...

C'mon everyone, come clean! :ss
exotic dancers and cigars kind of go hand in hand in my book. :tu

well said! i have to agree with you on this. It's so addictive! i couldn't have said it better myself and i also, would never give up this hobby!
