Feds to modify lighter ban on planes

Does anybody know if we're allowed to pack torch butane lighters in our check-in luggage?

I figure if there's nobody there to potentially light it, there isn't much harm. I don't feel like getting my luggage held up, or worse, not making the trip because I packed my lighter.

Thanks in advance.
Only with a special case for it, such as the one made by colibri.

Don't forget you can put as many empty lighters in checked as you want.

I brought a torch lighter back from the US in my checked luggage 2 weeks ago.

does that mean u can carry a dupont onboard ???

Yes, I believe any soft flame lighters are allowed.

Has anyone gotten any hassle since the ban was lifted? I'll be testing it out next Friday with two Zippos (with the Vector soft flame insert).

I haven't tried to fly with any kind of torch; but I have flown with Bics in my carry-on without even the slightest problem. My guess is that a zippo with an insert (even the Z-plus otrch insert) would go unnoticed. Best of luck!!!

I carried a triple torch days after the ban was lifted and they didn't even look at it, flying from Vegas.

As an update, I took my zippo with the vector insert (soft flame). My bag was searched, as usual, and the guy opened the lighter to make sure it was a soft flame.

Hmm... this whole discussion gives me an idea for an absolute killer product.

The soft flame / torch convertible lighter!

Take it with you, when the screeners pipe up you can just say "no that's a regular lighter - look, yellow flame!"
Then once you're off the plane, you flip the hidden switch and toast your 'gars in peace...

Bad idea? Oh well, it was a thought... :D

Good timing on bringing this thread up.

Since the ban was lifted I've been traveling with a torch in my carry on with no problems. The first time was a cheap triple burner and since then a Ronson.

I fly all over the US, 2-4 round trips per month.

Actually, I spoke to a vendor at the last convention I was at......

Those are available. Perhaps I should do a group buy.

It is 50/50 on these "soft flame torches". I had one that was a twin torch when fully pressed down, and soft flame at half pressed. The damn TSA agent took the lighter and pressed it fully!!! Luckily, my father was nearby and took the lighter for me. I loved that lighter too, until it died an honorable death (overusage).

These soft torch lighters are out there, but I still only carry a regular lighter in my carry on and pack the torch in the transzpack inside my checked baggage.

PS: some of the agents will still give you hell about the lighters and cutters, so I would suggest printing the TSA guidelines prior to leaving for the airport and having them on you if you are challenged for lighters or cutters. :cb

Really? Like I said, I fly a ton and used to take a cheap cutter instead of my Xikar just in case. Once I went months w/o ever being asked to even take it out I switched.

Same with lighter, never even looked at. I've had eye drops I've forgotten to put in my bag with liquids they've made a big deal about and let the lighter go.

I'm sure it will be taken this evening when I fly though.
