firefighter needs some prayers....

great news they removed Brooke from the ventilator

Subject: She's off and running
About 4:30pm they removed the vent tube. She is
breathing very well on her own. She will be in a fog
for a few days and her throat will hurt like heck!
She is trying to talk but we usually can't understand
her. The doctor said her eyes will be foggy and so
will her brain for a day or 2. She has been on a lot
of heavy drugs. They plan to move her upstairs
tomorrow. Hopefully they can find her a room to share
with a female.
No idea of how much longer she will be in the
hospital. There was talk of another surgery soon.
I need to ask that she not have any visitors until her
throat heals enough to talk. Mike has been with her
all day and doing great with her.
Yeah....she's almost back.

here's the lastest news

Subject: Brooke 11/5
They are ready to move Brooke out of ICU but no beds
were available on the burn unit. They should be
taking her up to a bed in the surgical floor in the
morning hopefully. If a bed becomes available in the
burn unit they want her there. No idea of when she
will be released but if she keeps the pace of the last
few days it could be sooner than later. She is
talking but has a very raspy voice. She had so many
weird dreams while on the drugs that she is trying to
sort out what is true and what is from tripping out.
She should be back to her old self in the next 24/48
hours. I think she may be going in for one more
surgery and hopefully that's all.
One of the injured firefighters was released today.
He had the worst burns of the 4 of them. He even had
skin grafts done.
Just remember that if you do come see her to limit
your time to 10 minutes. She will have so many
firefighters that want to see her that we may have to
get in line :) It truly is a brother/sisterhood of
1st responders!

Subject: Brooke 11/6
Brooke was released from ICU last night. I went back
at 8:30 (no visitors in ICU between 6:30-8:30) and was
told they were in the process of moving her upstairs
to the 5th floor. At one point it was yes, no, 5th
floor, 8th floor......Anyways she is now in a regular
room. I stayed all night with her. She was still
coming off the strong drugs and didn't want to be
alone at night. It was a difficult 12 hours for her.
She started having pain but didn't want to take
morphine and would only take 1/2 the dose of pain
medicine that was ordered. She was afraid that she
would start hallucinating on the morphine and be sick
from the other meds. One minute she was cold the next
hot and the rest of the time hot and cold at the same
time. The new nurse at 7:30 told her to take the full
dose of pain meds and he could add medicine to her IV
for nausea. Within a 1/2 she was feeling much better
and complaining about the catheter. Finally that was
removed and she thought she could just get up and walk
to the bathroom. She found out quickly that you don't
lay in a bed for 17 days and then walk immediately.
She managed to get it all together within 15 minutes
and walked to the bathroom with the help of her two
firefighter girlfriends but came back to bed
exhausted. She really needed to sleep since we both
had been awake since the day before but there were a
lot firefighters visiting her and even a large group
of out of area firefighters that came to see everyone
before they left town. When I drove away there were 5
firetrucks from Northern Calif. parked outside the
hospital. I feel bad for the lady sharing her room!!!
Luckily it's a big room.
I heard she took the morphine later today. Probably
when they changed her dressings and removed what donor
skin that would come off easily. She has a piece
still left on her nose and a small piece on her cheek.
Hopefully these 2 spots will heal on their own and
she won't need skin grafts. Her lungs are doing
really good. If she doesn't need skin grafts I
wouldn't be surprised to see her home real soon. Like
in a few days???? Don't quote me on that I could be
wrong.

Subject: DRUM ROLL PLEASE........
Brooke 11/09/07
Today was a exciting day. Brooke had a good night and
was wanting out of the hospital. She got her wish. I
went to see her this morning and left the hospital at
11:45. She called me at 1:12 to say they were letting
her go home. After learning how to change the
dressing twice a day on her ear and given all the
exercise info from PT she was out the door sometime
around 6pm.
They still don't know if the right ear will heal
without surgery but she was very happy to hear she can
be treated on a outpatient basis.
As for me.....I hope to leave Saturday morning for a
long drive to Baton Rouge to be there in time for
Autumn's baby. Maybe he or she will be born on
Brooke's birthday (11/13)
Brooke is going to KSON radio in the morning to be
their "hero of the week" and get her paycheck doubled!
I think that is sometime after 8am. On Saturday she
plans to be at the Poway Wall mart for a BBQ
fundraiser for the injured firefighters. Wall mart is
donating the food and I think some firefighters will
be there with their engine to help cook and promote
it. It's from 10-3 if you are in the area and hungry.
There will be an official media event once all four
firefighters are well. At that time they can attend
if they choose and the public will then learn their
names.
Thank you for all the well wishes, donations, help
with Ciara, the dogs and prayers. And Yes, she is
already talking about going back to work. They can
start her off at headquarters until she is fully
recovered and then she plans to be back at her
station.
Thanks again from a very happy Mom and family!!!
