Found a beetle hole

I had a large tupperdor with about 50 cigars in it, all cigars where in cello. I finally decided to get a new humi which arrived today so it was time for the cigars to come out of the tupperdor and their cello into the humi. The cigars had been sealed in the humi for at least 2 weeks (nothing in, nothing out). While going through the cigars, one (a Padilla Hybrid for what its worth) had a bug hole. The cigar was purchased two weeks ago. I immediately inspected the cello and it had no holes. I inspected every other cigar (and then inspected every cigar I have) and no more holes. For what it is worth, I am freezing the Padilla if for no other reason to test the freezing method for the first time. But I decided against freezing the rest of my collection and they are happy in the humi now. The question is, it is possible for a beetle to bore a hole then die? Is there anyway to determine if this hole is new? I plan on keeping a very close eye on all my cigars over the next few weeks, but could this be one of those things where I happen to have discovered hole #1 and tommorow my humidore could look like a golf course of do you think it is more likely this was a once off hole and the bugger/buggers are dead?

I remember my first beetle hole. It was a CAO Brazillia Gol! I found the only cure for that beetle and for that hole. I smoked that cigar right then and there. Never found any more holes in any more cigars. Basically what I'm getting at is, not to worry, that silly beetle won't affect the taste of your smoke. :ss

It is out the freezer sitting in a plastic bag. I will cremate him tomorrow evening! :gn :ss

Best course of action, my friend. Actually I think if you've only found one hole, you're probably ok on the rest of your smokes. That's all I found, and I had that thing sitting in my humidor for about a week. I never found another cigar with a hole in it.

Darrell, I am assuming you mean my once off claim?

A few of my customers buy them, and they have told me they had issues with holes in them.

Never fired one up have you? :pu

You may want to slow down Chief and let it re-acclimate to the humidity before you smoke it. :2

Darell,

OK, you are taking about holes in the Padilla Hybrid. I thought you were refering to finding one hole in a humidor filled with cigars, removing that cigar and have no issues after. I have 2 hybrids, the other is coming out of the humi right now too.

Hehe.

Yes, I was speaking about the Hybrids. Recently a lot of people have complained about them to me, specifically their now bad taste and poor quality as well as beetle holes. :tu

Darrell,

I think it would be awesome if you could put out a list of problem cigars, or maybe start a list. I am in no way qualified to start that. You said Padilla Hybrids get holes, I removed the other one from the humi...boom, plain and simple, not worth the risk. It would be great to get a list of manufacturers who do not go the extra mile.

It's hard to compile such a list because their is such a large amount of sticks to put a manufacturer totally on blast. You know what I mean?

For example you and Bob could get a bad batch of Obsidians, while Dick, Wayne, and Ed get a great batch all purchased from the same spot and time as you and Bob. I'd hate to compile such a list and make people think that no matter what a certain stick is always going to take like ass, burn bad, or get eaten by beetles.

OK, that does make sense. Still, I know these two were ordered at the same time/same place so I will isolate both and destroy them this weekend by burning them one at a time. Back to the original question though, you think the rest of the humidor is safe? I need to get to sleep tonight!! I am killing myself here :hn :D

Havne't had a beetle in my cigars yet, but I have had a thumbnail sized beetle fly in my face during last night's smoke (the joys of having to open my windows when smoking).

....that got a big laugh from my roomate, who saw me roll back fast enough to tip the computer chair I was in over....stogie in mouth, having a minor cursing fit.

:tpd: Me too i just burn em when i find one(wich is rare for me).I do remember they pop & sizzle like bacon though when you smoke them.:r :dr :dr :dr :dr

Want you need to do right away to save them is to pack them in an air tight bag, put them in a box and ship them to me. I will personally inspect each stick and test for smoke quality. If they are okay, then I will give my approval that they smoke okay and that they are bug free. If you don't do this, then your whole collection may spoil. Better to be safe than sorry!
