Humidification Beads: FAQs

this idea is great for bigger humidors. i have a desktop humi and need all the space i can get inside of there, no space for a cup with the beads :(

The beads also come in a perforated tube. The tube takes the place of one cigar and will take care of a 50-75 count humi easily.

Humidification beads are a moisture sensitive silica material which absorbs and desorbs moisture in order to offset changes in relative humidity (RH). The beads are generally available preset to a specific RH, in the case of cigars 65% and 70%. Opinions differ as to what is the “best” RH for cigars but most BOTLs seem to prefer 65% and that is my experience as well.

Viper, doesn't climax also make beads that split the difference now-- 68%?

I just checked their website and they don't have anything like that. I am in the porocess of adding 70% beads to my website but not 68%. Just a bit of info here. I checked the manufacturer he uses and they don't make any 68% beads, by the way neither does the manufacturer I buy from.

Do the beads have an expiration period, or can you forever add water and the beads will retain it's humidification regulating properties perpetually?

The do not have a set life expectancy, in essence they will last forever as long as you only use distilled water or its' equivelent. The impurities in regular tap water will clog the beads after a while.

magno I'd hate to go on vacation for a month and have my Cigar Oasis run out of water on me.[/QUOTE said:
?? Your Oasis Plus needs refilling that often?

I have to agree, if you are refilling it that often there is a bigger problem going on here.

. I was just speaking off the cuff. I just refilled it last week for the first time in the 3 months I've had it. In general, while I like active humidifiers so far, the thought of them running out or the power going out while I'm gone is perhaps a decent argument for the beads.

That makes more sense. In actuality you can have a container of beads in a humidor with an active system. The beads will absorb humidity until they are saturated then just sit there. If you have a power failure of the tank runs dry then the beads will start to desorb and keep the humi at the prescribed level until they run out of moisture. A greart insurance policy.

i havent even received mine yet and im excited. hey david i was thinking since the beads come un-soaked if i place both tubes in my humi and remove the credo wont they suck out any and all of the remaining moisture in the humi?

Well they will absorb until they are full.

Dave

This is exactly what I did with my new cab. 30 cf. CO II with (so far) 3 lbs of beads on three levels. I'm getting 65 at the bottom and top hygros for the past 3 days. Seems to work well. The beads are around half clear half opaque white. I thought the beads would add "stabilizaton" and just in case for power outages and dunderhead non refills of the CO. Your spec says 6 lbs for this size humi. any value in my upping to 6 with this type of set-up?
