Humidification Beads: FAQs

Dave:

Since I already ordered the Boveda seasoning packets and first month supply of packets, how would I go about switching over to your beads after 2 months?

My humidors are small desktop (382.5 cu. in.) and large tower (2304 cu. in.). Should I buy one large tube for 2200 cu. in, and two small tubes of 65RH, one for the middle drawer and one for the lower drawer, placing the large tube in the upper drawer? Also, when I receive your beads in this situation, do I need to moisten them with distilled water, since the humidors should already be at 65%RH?

Thanks!

Go ahead and use the Bovedas until they are done.

Your idea of spreading the beads around is a good one. In larger humidors it helps the balance in the whole box if the beads are spread out a little.

Before placing the beads in your humidor add a little distilled water, just enough that roughly 80% of the beads are clear with the rest either white or opaque. Leaving some white will allow the beads to absorb any extra moisture that is introduced into you humidor like cigars that are a little over humidified.

You are then good to go. Any other questions just ask.

David:

One more question: Should I order (1) 4oz. 65% rh tube(2160 cu.in.) and 1 each of the 1/2 oz. 65% (270 cu. in.) tubes?

In other words, is it ok to have too many beads according to the calculated requirement for each humidor?

Thanks for all the help!

Hey guys :cbI have the beads in my 200 ct humidor and a shot glass of distilled water. Is that ok ? or should I take the shot glass out. I live in Arizona.

I just ordered a pound of 65% beads and a couple socks for 'em to help stabilize my Aristocrat Mini. I like to stay around 63-65% and this winter it's been around 57-58, which is just too dry for me.

I got my new beads and they're working great already, but I was wondering something

my old beads that are around a year old now, are noticably yellowed. is this normal?

is this indicative of a certain problem? Should I have opened that cooler more often (there was a couple/few month period where it only got opened a couple times, oops)

thanks in advance

Not a problem. The beads have absorbed oils from the spanish cedar and from the off gas that the cigars do during aging. These will not hurt the performance of the beads just discolor them.

thank you very much for the speedy reply. they seemed to be working fine, they just looked "aged" :ss

I just put my beads in my humidor after spraying them with distilled water but since I live in Arizona I figured I leave the shot glass that I had inside with them. What do you recommend leaving the shot glass in or taking it out?

It's OL to leave it in there. Just as long as there are still some white beads then the rh will be OK.

David:

Have you ever had a problem with mold or a "musty" smell from older beads with frequent applications of distilled water such as might be needed in the winter with such low humidity?

Thanks!

Not from frequent application but yes from allowing the beads to sit in water or be over hydrated to the point that the container they are in has standing water. This is one of the reasons I recommend the beads only be hydrated to 80-85% clear with the rest white.

I have a few quick questions. I apologize if they have already been asked. I purchased 65% beads from you and there was quite a bit of "bead powder" at the bottom of the bag. Is that normal? This is the first time that I ever purchased beads. Sometimes these things can get away from you and are pretty hard to find. Are they non-toxic? I ask because I have a daughter with another one on the way. Are the beads that you sell the exact same beads that are sold by Cigarmoney.com? Sorry for all of the questions but these are a few things that popped in my head as I was adding them to my cooler today. Also, thanks for the great service. My order arrived quickly and in good shape.

It sounds like your package may have been handled roughly if there is an excessive amount of powder in the bag. If you can estimate the amount that you lost due to this I will be happy to send you some as a replacement.

In reading the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for the product I sell it is essentially safe. It states that inhalation may cause dryness to nose and throat and ingestion states no adverse effects expected.

I don't know what Cigarmony sells, sorry.

David, how long will it take the humidor to stabilize? I placed my half ounce 65% humitube in my 25 count desktop and removed my boveda packs that I was using and the humidity plummeted to 53%!

Did you leave the Boveda pack in until it was spent? The contents will get hard when it is done.

Also, did you add some distilled water tot he bead tube?

Definitely don't need the old humidification. If you left it in there, next to the beads, I'm betting they'd simply absorb the water from the hydration unit and you still wouldn't have a problem. But , regardless, just ditch the old humidifier.

DON'T exactly "ditch" the old humidifier. Save it for the time a delivery comes in and you have no room to store the new smokes. At that moment, you will be very happy you have the old credo hanging around, so you can put it in any reasonably airtight box you have available, especially an old cooler. Or, if you do not foresee the need for this, you can always send the old hockey puck to me.

No, I took the pack out this morning and I did add distilled water to the tube. Should I leave the boveda pack in?

Hey Viper:

Just read about the beads and felt it was the way to go. I ordered the large aluminum 65 RH humidifer to go with my 200-count desktop. Was THIS the way to go, or should I have ordered some tubes to strategically place in the top, middle and bottom? I just ordered and paid via PayPal...but methinks the tubes may work better? Any advice is welcomed and appreciated in advance.

Thanks Viper!
