Humidification Beads: FAQs

Hey Viper:

Just read about the beads and felt it was the way to go. I ordered the large aluminum 65 RH humidifer to go with my 200-count desktop. Was THIS the way to go, or should I have ordered some tubes to strategically place in the top, middle and bottom? I just ordered and paid via PayPal...but methinks the tubes may work better? Any advice is welcomed and appreciated in advance.

Thanks Viper!

You should be just fine, there are enough beads in the Aluminum to care for your humi. With that said, if you are having trouble with the rh balance in your humidor distributing the beads around in the humidor can help so if that is an issue you may consider the tubes instead.

Did you leave the Boveda pack in until it was spent? The contents will get hard when it is done.

Also, did you add some distilled water to the bead tube?

I get the adding more water bit. What I do not get is what you do when the beads start removing water. How do I dry them out when that happens?

There are a couple of ways that work well. Place the beads in a deep bowl and use a hair blow dryer on a low fan setting and dry the beads, it works fairly quickly. You can also place the beads on an oven safe dish and put them in the oven at the lowest temperature and let them go for a while.

Question: How fearful need I be of the distilled water over spray negatively affecting the cedar if I spray the tube in my humi? Is this even a concern? What if I place the tube in a glass of water- how negatively will the water "run-off" affect the cedar wood of the humi? Will mold form if the excess water is trapped under the bead tube? Do I need to feverishly dry the outside of the tube before placing it in the humidor? Should I place a piece of plastic between the humidor wood and the tube? (I think mold could also develop on plastic, however.)

Hope I made my concern clear- please advise.....

Getting some overspray on the cedar will not harm it, it may raise the grain of the wood but that won't damage it.

What I do is lay the tube on a dinner plate and spray it with a spray bottle filled with distilled water., turn the tube and spray again etc until 80-85% 0f the beads are clear. I then wipe off the excess water and lay the tibe on the kitchen counter and let it sit for 5 minutes or so. After that time wipe the tube off with a dry paper towel and you are good to go.

Don't dip the tube in a glass of distilled water, this technique can cause cracking of the beads. The cracked beads will still work just as well but ultimately the pieces will get so small that they will start to come out of the holes in the tube.

Just ordered another pound of my beads so I can set up a coolerdor!

Thanks david. this is my third order :p

Great, thanks Viper. I'm thinking of placing the aluminum in the middle of the humidor anyway to get as much even distribution as possible.

Viper,

I have a 100 ct desktop humidor with a tray.

I seasoned it twice cus the first time I did it, it was with a busted analog hygro. :D The 2nd time I used one of your digi hygro's.

My Humi hovered around 64%RH and 67 degrees for a while, but now seems to have stabalized at 59% RH. Accounting for a +/- that's... relatively 60%.

I purchased 65% beads. Did I screw something up? Or is there a random chance I got shipped 60% beads? (these did have the blue cap)

What would you recommend trying? The beads themselves are about 80% clear, and I used distilled water.

I'm double checking with a salt test to make sure the hygro is set right.

Thanks!

Re-checking the hygro is a good idea. Remember too that it takes a good whoile for a humidor to seasn completely, the wood will absorb the moisture for months untilit is seasoned completely.,

The chances of you being shipped 60% by accident is nill. 60% orders are packed individually as the order comes in.

Thanks Viper. I'll keep the salt test going. And thankyou for the ridiculously fast reply :D

From personal experience... the beads should not come into direct contact with cedar when they are fully charged/charging. They take on an odor from the cedar and discolor. Seem to work just fine just look funky.

Viper,

Just bought another ounce for my personal humidor at school (as well as a hygro). You have a fine product and I plan to continue to patronize your site.

PS my shipping details are a little weird since it's going to a UNiversity mailbox, so if you have any questions, please contact me. I put that in the extra notes section.

Ridiculous? I thought my delivery went astray, sent an email, and got a reply in ten minutes on Sunday! And, he told me where to find the missing package (I had it all the time, just didn't know it)

Hey Viper:

I think I'm just overreacting, but since I put the aluminum in, my humi is stuck at 75% RH and I have the 65 beads in. Should I just keep waiting to see if it stablizes? Re-season the humi? I think I put enough distilled water in (about 5cc's in each hole with the syringe), but any help would be great.

Thanks. Also, was I supposed to get the velcro hook?

You need to dry the beads completly and let them do the work to bring the rh down. :2

If you are really the high rh wise you do't need to ass any more distilled water. One question though, have you confirmed the accuracy of your hygrometer? Need to make sure that the reading you are getting is correct.

There should have been two round velcro pads in the package. Were'nt they there?
