"I'm sorry sir, we don't allow cigars"

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. But honestly, I don't have a problem with a bar deciding what they do or don't allow in their establishment (even if it doesn't make much sense). I have a problem with governments making the decision for them.

:tpd: Yep. The "smoking policy" & the quality of the product the bar serves, although impacting your overall experience, are two seperate issues.

The "smoking policy" was probably an ownership, or management decision that came directly from the top & it sounds like the doorman didn't behave in an unprofessional manner at all......just doing his job.

The skunky beer problem was a tactical situation that should have been addressed by the operations manager on duty.

1. They told you up front that there is no cigar smoking. You went in anyway.

2. They served you crap drinks and you listed many, so you must have stayed in there a little while.

3. Don't like the rules and/or service, leave and don't go back.

Sorry bro but I see no reason to get angry at others over a situation that you put yourself into.

you can smoke cigars in most of the bars around amarillo, but most of them suck anyway and I hate paying bar prices for alcohol

The smoking policy I had a problem with but yes I went in for my fiancee who loves the bar. I was more upset with the service over the beer then not allowing me to smoke. Which is why I told them as I left why I wouldn't be back.

In Minnesota the big casino --Mystic Lake--banned cigars but not cigarettes,,I have not been back since and I spent a lot of money in there..The thing that irrates me is that I feel the cigarette smokers should have complained to management as much as the cigar smokers because they are next but no complaints from them except they compained about the cigar smokers too. Minnesota went smoke free Oct 1 and the papers ran articles about the ban but what I'm curious about is why not one story since the banned started about how its affecting the local bars is to be found. I smoke at home now and save my money for other things..Now the people that thought it was such a good Idea can go to the little hole in the wall bars that they always wanted to go to but were afraid of the deadly smoke (yea right)..

Jerry in Minnesota..

Hey!!! You can come to my place and smoke all the cigars you want, and I have good beer and I know how to mix a drink!! :ss

I should have known this was going to be a bad night right there. I'd been to this bar a few times before but I never took any sticks with me. As we left the apartment I fired up an AF I've never had before. had the SS/Best Seller nipple on it but it was a full size stick...now sure what it is. I was really enjoying it we walked in the bar and as he's checking my ID the bouncer tells me "we don't allow cigars". But they allow cigs Normally I would have just said "that's fine give me my ID back and I'll be on my way" but my fiancee loves this bar so I stayed.

First Pitcher was skunked, second was skunked, salt for the tequila shot almost made me barf, the rum and coke was coke with a bit of rum, the only thing that wasn't bad was the balieys I had. Three people told the bar tender about the beer but they didn't care. I made a point to stay sober, not that I could have gotten drunk with the crap they were serving me, and CHARGING me for!, anyway but on my way out I stopped and told the bouncer "you know I really like your bar but due to your smoking policy I won't be back"

His response, "well that's the way it's always been" Not sorry, not would you like to talk to a manager, no he said "well that's the way it's always been" Well FECK that. There are 8 billion bars downtown I don't need that one. I may call down today and ask to speak to the manager about the beer and smoking policy

Sorry for the long post I just needed to vent

Just out of curiosity, where did this happen?

As soon as the bouncer would of said "No cigar smoking", I would of left right then and there. I'm not going to support an establishment, that doesn't support me.
The thing is..who suffers in the end? IMO..it's the bartenders..I'm a heavy tipper! I have no problems dropping a $25-$40 tip for 5 hours of taking up a bar seat. Now if I was with my buddies..you easily could count us for over $130.00 worth of tips on our group alone. The owner of the club could say..."Cigars stink" well so do cigarettes...I don't understand the business logic.

99.9% of us here are polite cigar smokers (we wait ill people are done eating)..could someone please explain the logic?
I used to bartend on the side for over 2 years..I know the game..and you take care of the customers who spend money on the house and YOU.

Bottom line is..with the D.U.I. laws getting tougher every year, these bars shouldn't be turning patrons away who spend money.

It's up to us..the cigar smoker to make an appoint to let these establishments know how we feel, when we are turn down to smoke cigars. It's one thing, if it's posted (in which I would still voice my opinion) but most establishments don't hang "no cigars" signs.
Letting these establishments know that.."I will never walk in this establishment again until your policy changes..gives these owners something to think about. If these places are allowing cigarette smoking..cigars should be allowed as well IMO. I'd tell the owner or the bar manager to do the math, over the course of a year, of how much money they are losing, and ask if that's smart business practice.
I'm elated every time a "NO Cigar friendly" place closes down...cause I know we are part of the reason they couldn't make ends meet.

I refuse to go to a place that doesn't allow cigar smoking. I want to support the places who are cigar friendly, and want me to come spend my money in their establishment.

Finally, I get pissed off, when I unknowingly go into a "No cigar" friendly place, and see this establishment spend a ton of money on everything except where it counts.."the ducting, and smoke eating system". There is NO REASON in the world with not providing your establishment with the best possible system money can buy today. I've been to some of the best cigar friendly restaurants in the city of Philadelphia, and you would never know a cigar was ever lit!
When we are done in this country with banning smoking..we should get the high and almighty to ban Public bathrooms next, because that is 10 TIMES WORSE THAN SMOKE!!!
Every time you go to a public bathroom, you are in danger of contracting someone else's germs, bacteria and diseases!!

Oh man..now I'm started!!

A bad Night Caused by us responding to our S/O wants and needs can be frustrating especially when we have to pay the tab for Beer water and below standard drinks but I would have given the first drink back to the bartender and and ordered bottled they usually can't mess that up to much If that sucked it's time to walk.I always have plan b for some were else. You are right it is sometimes better to vent than cause a fight it ain't worth my time anymore my :2

Managers usually do not care if it's just the one person who lodges his complaint,,if you are with your buddies it makes more of an impact since they know they just lost a grouping for lunch, drinks, etc etc. I'm seeing more places with these same "NO CIGAR" policies and the ones who complain more about cigars are people who smoke cigarettes. The "NO SMOKING" policy came from the complaint of non smokers over people smoking next to them in restaurants. We are just dealing with the backlash in my opinion and the future belongs to those who complain the loudest,,i.e. the chronic complainers.

:tpd:

as a chef i have been in the passager seat at a resturant who does not like cigars and its always the cigarette smokers bit*%ing about us.
most of the time the gm does not care about any thing other than a check and how much blow they are going to buy. i even worked at a cigar bar where cigarette smokers would come in and complan about the cigar smoke. in a cigar bar

cigarette smokers would complain about cigars in a cigar bar:confused:

This has baffled me for a while. My uncle owns a bar in NC that allows smoking. This place is a dive where bikers and 'Good ol' Boys' come to play pool and drink. The place is filled with smoke but if you light up a cigar everyone complains, even the pansy a$$ bikers.

As far as the cigar smoking goes, most people find it more disgusting than cigs. That's just the way it is and that's not going to change. You think the owner cares about the 1 out of 100 people who wants to smoke a cigar when 90 of those same people (who are buying drinks) find it offensive? I love smoking but I understand other people don't love my smoke. The "screw'em, I'll smoke where I want attitude" is a bit arrogant. I'm not saying the OP has it, but many do.

If you have a cigar bar or a cigar friendly bar in your town. Support it! Talk it up and spend your money there. I know this isn't what most people do but for years I would go outside to smoke at bars that didn't allow cigars. Sometimes even give a cigar to the bouncer to draw support for cigars. Remember each and every one of us are ambassadors for cigars. Break the bad rep and make a good impression. I know I live in Florida, so it's easier to smoke outside but the bouncer did get a table set up outside for me and he even started smoking a stogie every once and a while with me.
Support your cigar friendly bars and make the best of it at the others.

i feel for you, but i don't understand how, in this day and age, you would assume you CAN smoke a cigar in any establishment? and why would you think the bouncer would even care? sucks about the drinks, too. i wouldn't have ordered the second pitcher if they had not addressed the problem.
