I like to read the reviews on top25cigar before I make a purchase. I also read the reviews right before I smoke on to see if I can taste what everyone else is tasting.
Rude/uneducated local B&M's are exactly what the internet is for.
:tpd: it happens far too often and you can't beat the internet. same happens with some forums and that's why there is cs.Rude/uneducated local B&M's are exactly what the internet is for.
Went to a little shop today that I had been hearing good things about. The guy working there acted like I was wasting his time, If I asked a question about a brand I would get a roll of the eyes. If I asked for recomendations he would say "whatever you like".
I had told him earlier that I was new at buying alot of these, thought he might be some help. Normally I would have walked out and not bought a thing. But since the other shop I was thinking about going to was quite a ways away(60-70 miles) and I was just about out of smokes, I told him I'll just pick some out on my own.
For a noob I think I made some good choices: Rocky Patel vintage '92, La Flor double ligero, CAO mx2, and one a buddy told me about- Makers mark.
From now on I'll find another shop to spend my cash at, but for tonight I'll sit down with Rocky and some Crown and relax:ss
I agree that the LFD DL is a great cigar... but I cannot agree with your comment that you did well for a noob.
LFD DL is no cigar for a noob! :dr
I am fortunate to have at least two great local B&Ms.
One gave me a big shove down the slope with a Gran Habano #3, Oliva G, and a RyJ Reserva Real.
The other pushed further with an Ashton 898, Oliva V, well you get the idea.
This would have been the only way I would have been able to try these smokes as one-offs.
Plus, both are very attentive to my needs.
One is a father-son business and the "kid" (probably early 30's) told me one of the great pleasures in his business is to recommend new cigars for people.
Very hard to fault a philosophy like that.
They always ask right away when I enter if I need help, I tell them I am still looking, and they return after 10 minutes or so and ask nicely again.
At that point if I haven't made up my mind I ask for recommendations.
Very old-school midwest small business attitudes, and that sits very well for me.
May their doors remain open (especially to let out the smoke).
If you find a good local, throw them some business, they may be gone next week . . .

Just a little extreme... I see no humor in this.
