Local B&M ......rude, cocky

I like to read the reviews on top25cigar before I make a purchase. I also read the reviews right before I smoke on to see if I can taste what everyone else is tasting.

Sorry to hear this. Seems as though your town needs a bit more competition. I am fortunate to have not found a bad shop just yet in OKC. Knock on wood. :cb

Went to a little shop today that I had been hearing good things about. The guy working there acted like I was wasting his time, If I asked a question about a brand I would get a roll of the eyes. If I asked for recomendations he would say "whatever you like".
I had told him earlier that I was new at buying alot of these, thought he might be some help. Normally I would have walked out and not bought a thing. But since the other shop I was thinking about going to was quite a ways away(60-70 miles) and I was just about out of smokes, I told him I'll just pick some out on my own.

For a noob I think I made some good choices: Rocky Patel vintage '92, La Flor double ligero, CAO mx2, and one a buddy told me about- Makers mark.
From now on I'll find another shop to spend my cash at, but for tonight I'll sit down with Rocky and some Crown and relax:ss

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with him. He might have seen his business hurt with the current market conditions, not to say that there is ever a reason to treat your customers like that. I wish you better luck during your next purchase!

I stopped tonight at a JR Cigar outlet store and was disappointed with their service but I did get to pick up 2 fivers some Gispert Toro Maduros and Astral Cameroons.

I hope you enjoy the smokes and overlook rude people like that.

Just remember - if you receive bad service from one guy, don't let it symbolize the entire store's staff. I dropped into a B&M that I had never visited before last fall - had a bad experience with a guy that had the personality of an empty box - went ahead and purchased a couple of sticks I had enjoyed before and left. I drove by that place several times after that and thought of the one bad experience, then thought I should try it again. Glad I did, the guy was no where to be seen and was met by a friendly guy who was willing to share advice but at a distance. I will defiantely revisit the B&M again knowing that it's always hit n miss with who you may encounter but eventually the jerks who act as if they don't won't to be there, will eventually disappear - just a matter of time before it catches up to them.

Cheers and long ashes!

I know what you mean. Either their in your face and won't give you brathing room or else they act like they did you a favor by letting you into their humidor. I try to support the local b&m stores in my area and am lucky to have found a couple that treat me right. The others won't get any of my money! Just remember that sometimes it's the person not the place!:tu

The first time I walked into a B&M I got similar service. I had smoked maybe two cigars from a friend before finally going to a B&M and buying my own, I was so unaware of how many cigars there were. When I asked for help the dude seemed friendly and asked me what I like, I was thinking he would be helpful. Instead of recommending any, he simply pointed to the shelves and told me what was on them "There is Fuente, they are popular, Hoyo de Monterrey, Rocky Patel, Punch, etc." I stood there thinking "Well ain't that nice, I can read too you numbskull!!". He then walked out, I bought a handful of smokes and never returned to that shop.

Life's too short, and I'd move on. First impressions are key to my repeat business. Bottom line, it's my money to spend how and where I choose. I make the effort not to spend money where I don't feel I'm appreciated for doing so.

Nice choice on sticks. I havn't tried the Maker's Mark, so I'll look forward to hearing what you thought on that one.

Cheers :tu

I agree that the LFD DL is a great cigar... but I cannot agree with your comment that you did well for a noob.

LFD DL is no cigar for a noob! :D :dr

:tpd:

If your new to cigars - ya may wanna wait on this one - good but a tad loaded. Eat well before smoking.

I am fortunate to have at least two great local B&Ms.
One gave me a big shove down the slope with a Gran Habano #3, Oliva G, and a RyJ Reserva Real.
The other pushed further with an Ashton 898, Oliva V, well you get the idea.
This would have been the only way I would have been able to try these smokes as one-offs.
Plus, both are very attentive to my needs.
One is a father-son business and the "kid" (probably early 30's) told me one of the great pleasures in his business is to recommend new cigars for people.
Very hard to fault a philosophy like that.
They always ask right away when I enter if I need help, I tell them I am still looking, and they return after 10 minutes or so and ask nicely again.
At that point if I haven't made up my mind I ask for recommendations.
Very old-school midwest small business attitudes, and that sits very well for me.
May their doors remain open (especially to let out the smoke).
If you find a good local, throw them some business, they may be gone next week . . .

You must be talking about Ted.If so he also has a nephew John .Nice guys:ss

True, I guess, and I do make 90 percent of my purchases online. Normally it would be 98% but The guy at the humidor pipe shop is such a damn fine Gentleman that I can't help but want to go.

I went to one B&M in the Bronx and the girl working there actually knew what she was talking about and was giving recommendations. Having found a good shop we went back later in the day and her brother was working......he didnt know jack about ciagrs, all he probably knew was how to work the cash register.

Just a little extreme... Having lost my local B&M to a fire, I see no humor in this.

I would give them another shot or try to go when someone else is working, you never know. :ss
