Matt's Lighter Fix/More Power Instructions

I have "saved" more lighters than I can remember by doing this. I was told how to do this 10+ years ago by a Colibri tech. GREAT write-up and pics Matt! I'm sure there will be many "saved" lighter reported.

Hey Mike, Colibri lighters can be fixed/improved in the same manner. Any lighter with the same type of butane fill valve can be done (as long as you can figure how to get the case off).

Bumping this as I found a thread today that would benefit from this and it has been a year since the thread was topped.

Great post! So will you be adding "Lighter Technician" or "Gas Flow Rate Engineer" to your resume?

Here is a Nibo Royal getting the fix.

Briefly the steps are (see above for longer instructions)
  1. Remove the screw on bottom of case
  2. Slide casing off (usually down in some fashion)
  3. Remove O Ring
  4. Remove Metal Stop Ring
  5. Adjust flow rate to a sensible higher flow rate (usually 1/4 to 1/2 turn past original stop point)
  6. Test fire to check flame height, lower if you hear sputtering, and test again.
  7. Reassemble

Thanks for this...I just fixed a Ronson I was having a little trouble with, and it now works 10x better.

Amazing what you stumble across in the jungle! Now I know the few wimpy lighters I have are not ready for the scrap heap! Thanks for the education.

Just waiting for Matt to supersize a PB-207!:r

I have found the flame of PB-207 to be sufficient such that I have been able to stop myself from taking it apart thus far. I will admit though that I have been tempted several times. It will certainly be a different procedure since the lever turns the adjustment dial. I suspect you would remove the lever, turn the dial 180, and reinsert the lever. If/when a PB-207 dies on me though I will try to fix it and take pictures..

Last week I adjusted one of the Holt's freebie "tiki torch" lighters and got a crazy high flame out of it before hearing the sputters. It is able to mix enough air in to get a higher flame than most lighters that I have modified so far.

I figure that if I ever supertuned a PB-207, it would be illegal to use it at night since I live on one of the approaches to Logan Airport. Planes would take that thing to be a landing beacon. Great series, enjoyed it tremedously.

AUSOM THREAD! You just made my Xiker lighter as functional as my ronsonal cheepy!.. go figure.

But getting that blasted microscopic o-ring back on was a trick for the ham fisted.
