Newbie Read - Updating Your Humidifier

Saved again, was going to go with the tubes but now will go with a larger bag seeing that I am well on my way to a Coolerdor also.

OK, I just got a new humidor and it has two rectangular humidifiers. I have removed the foam and placed my beads in pantyhose. It looks just like this, but the pantyhose instead of the bag:

When spraying the beads, should I open the plastic and spray the pantyhose or open the pantyhose and spray the beads.

It seems the holes are small in the pantyhose, I assume this is nothing to worry about?

Thanks for the help.

The pantyhose will be just fine - no problems there. I don't open the plastic case when I re-wet mine - I spray it through the holes in the case - does the job for me.

Re: How To: Updating Your Humidifier - With Vipers Beads

I am sure as a Newbie you have read the threads about the "beads" which can be bought from HeartFelt. But maybe you still have questions about using them or maybe you just want to update your humidifier to the best it can be. Well in the old adage that a picture is worth a 1000 words - here is a "how-to" on the subject.
I am not going to explain how they work - there are posts on that already - I'm just going to show you some examples of how they can be used. And of course I have no vested interest in Viper's beads - just a user of them.

So - let's say that you have a nice little humidor like the one pictured below.

dscf0013_std.jpg

Now you can see that there is not a whole lot of room in there - added to that there is a plate in the lid so that the humidifier can be attached to the lid - no space lost below. Yours may have velcro of some sort. In any case - you get the idea

Here you can see the bag of beads, a cloth mesh bag, humidifier and a tool to open the case.

Inside we find the standard foam that would use either straight distilled water or a PG solution.

Notice that on the back side of the lid - we see more vent holes that are covered up by the label. Let's pop that off -

what kind of humidor is that? diamond crown?

RGD - This is an amazing post. :tu Thank you for taking the time to do this. The pics make it sooooo easy to follow. I think I'll change out my floral foam in the near future.

Re: How To: Updating Your Humidifier - With Vipers Beads

Thanks for the post, I kind of got carried away and had two tubes and the humidifier in a 50 count humidor, needles to say the humidity % was way high. I have removed the two tubes and now only have the black humidifier. It is still at 78% humidity… recommendations on how to reduce the humidity?? (I have calibrated the digital hygrometer with whole salt in a baggy)

Now when it comes time to recharge these beads, do you remove them from the plastic and spray them or just spray through the vents?

Right through the vents will work fine.

Remove all humidifiers until the rh goes below 70%, then use only one tube for humidification.

I usually remove the plastic top (but leave the beads in the bag which is inside the humidifier) and re-hydrate that way. Just make sure you shake any excess water droplets away and wipe the humidifier down, otherwise you'll end up dripping some water on the stogies.

Too many beads is not going to cuase your RH to go up. However, if the beads are too wet, they won't be able to re-absorb some of the excess humidity that may be in the humidor, and they RH will stay high. Especialy if the room humidity is high.

Just remove the humidifiers/beads until the RH gets down to the desired level, and dry out the beads a bit as well. Then put them back in. (You can dry the beads in a couple ways -- on a cookie sheet in the over on low setting for a few hours, or using a hair drier (on LOW!! Don't want to blow the beads away!).

But yeah, you don't need that many beads in a 50-ct. :)

Thanks for this. I had been reading about these and wondering how they work and are implemented in a coolerdor or humidor and haven't been understanding it in words. Your post was excellent. Thanks.

Everything you ever wanted to know about humidificataders and beads, but were afraid to ask! Great Post!

Thanks

Much appreciated. I also like the illustration with photos. Sometimes verbal descriptions aren't enough, especially when you don't understand the pieces being described.

Thanks for the posts. I just threw the mesh bag into the humidor. I might try to put some of them in the plastic humidifier that I took out.
