# of Lbs. of Beads Needed in a Vinotemp

Just bought one yesterday.

Was curious as to how many lbs. is recommended for the Vino. I already have 1 lb of the 65% Heartfelt beads and 2 Oust fans.

Will I still need more beads?

In my opinion it depends on your location. I am in SoCal where it is hot has heck so the vino runs a lot and I use 2 lbs. of Shilala beads. I am sure that 1 lb. will do just fine in most regions. I use 2 because IMO the more the merrier. Have fun with the new Vino buddy:tu

Depends, depends, depends. As has been said already.

I pack my vinos pretty tight, so I have 2 lbs in each. One on the bottom and one about 2/3 the way to the top. I have a single fan that I am considering removing. I'm in Portland, OR, where it is cool and humid lots of the year. I expect to leave my vinos unplugged for about 8 months out of 12. I have not plugged the drain, but plan to put duct tape over the drain during the next "great tetris game" which should be soon (as opposed to the one last weekend).

Since I've had the vinos, I've had problems with draw. I've found that putting a range of sticks into the Savoy 300 ct for more than a week (with about 1/4lb of beads, not dryboxing) helps immensely.

1 pound, half in top tray, half on bottom over drain hole. No extra fans. Humidity has been steady at 66% for three months, with no top-ups.

Seems there is a variety of opinions somewhere between 1 -2 lbs.

I live in FL where of course the majority of the year it is hot. I plan on keeping the Vino in a spare upstairs bedroom where it is typically 76-77*F most of the day during the warmer months (May - early Oct.).

Also, am I correct to assume that the purpose of taping over the drain plug is to prevent humidity loss? I read where some guys put beads over the drain plug. Again, I would assume the beads are in some sort of pantyhose or mesh bag and the just continue to absorb the moisture and condensation that would normally run into the drain?

Thanks again to all for the education.

There is a STICKY called Vinotemp 101 at the top of this sub-forum that answers just about every Vino question possible :tu

the best thing is to go to heartfelt web site there is a calculator measure the humi and put the numbers in and it tells you on the chart , MIne i have 5lbs

How do I calculate what size Puck-ifier™ or how many RH Beads™ I will need?

To calculate the volume, simply follow this formula:
Multiply the length in inches X width in inches X height in inches
(ex: 10 in. x 10 in. x 10 in. = 1000 cu. in.)

1 oz = 540 cu. in.
2 oz = 1080 cu. in.
3 oz = 1620 cu. in.
4 oz = 2160 cu. in.
5 oz = 2700 cu. in.
6 oz = 3240 cu. in.
7 oz = 3780 cu. in.
8 oz = 4320 cu. in.
9 oz = 4860 cu. in.
10 oz = 5400 cu. in.
11 oz = 5940 cu. in.
12 oz = 6480 cu. in.
13 oz = 7020 cu. in.
14 oz = 7560 cu. in.
15 oz = 8100 cu. in.
16 oz = 8640 cu. in.

I hope this helps

When you use those calculators, you need to use INSIDE DIMENSIONS. I have 24 ouces of Shilala beads (Scott calculated based on inside dimensions) and they do the job great.
