Opinions on Puros Indios?

I received an e-mail from Cigars International with their special of the week: Puros Indios Reserva Maxima Presidente, a box of 20 for $29.99. I have never smoked one of these, and I am wondering whether this is a good deal. CI claims that these are 90-rated, but I know how cigar sellers are. They can make the worst dog rocket on the planet sound like the tastiest stick ever made.

I am interested in the opinions of those who have tried these.

I smoked a PI the other day that my father in law had in his humi. was kind of a quick grab, but it wasnt that bad at all.. not a premim smoke but worth that price.. only time ive tried before that was their candela in the past.. and it wasnt to great.

I've liked the Maxima Reservas and Viejos lines in the media corona and robusto sizes respectively, only other vitola I've had was some PCs (Maxima Reserva) and they were rank, very rank. I let them sit 6 months, still rank, 12 months, still rank... dumpster!

I've never seen a brand that inspired the CS vomit smileys more often.

I used to like Puros Indios....don't care for most of em any more. I'm not sure if it is a transition cigar, or if the brand has gone downhill in recent years.

I still like the Cuba Aliados line & have a partial box of corojo toros in my humi.

The Presidente has never received a 90-rating. CI does this all the time. If one size gets a 90-rating they apply that to the ad copy on every size they sell forever. As we all know one size in a line can be great and another can be a dog rocket. It's not fair to claim every stick is a 90 when only two have been rated that high.

The robusto got a 90 in Oct '04 and the corona got a 90 in Dec '02. The line was most recently reviewed 3 years ago when the Churchill got an 85 and the Toro got an 86. The Presidente has never been rated.

Personally, I've never found a Puro Indios that I've enjoyed. I know some people like them but to me it's just a very bland tobacco flavor with very little taste.

It is a good price but even at $29.99 I'd get a fiver of something else.

I have never had these but for some reason, most around here seem to universally not care for them. Hell, I don't even care if I never try them at this point. Way to many other smokes to try.

This thread really helped out. I was almost suckered into that CI deal as well. I generally like to stock to humi up with random things and that seemed like a good price on a 90 rated stick. Guess I'll pass on the deal. I also have one PI sitting in my humi now that I keep thinking about trying. I'll just keep thinking on that and enjoy some of the other tasties I have. Thanks all.

I am very surprised that the PI sticks were that bad!

For those that were rank, can you describe the smell? Where did you get them? Did you contact the company you bought them from or notify Reyes Family (Puros Indios)? If you every get a bad stick, let the manufacturer know. We want to correct those kinds of problems. I know others have contact different manufacturers in the past when they get bad cigars and they take care of them.

We do have all new lines that were released this year. They are good sticks. My personal favorite is the new Reyes Family Classic line. I hope everyone will give them a try.

Let me know if you have any questions or issues. I will make sure it is taken care of!

The Reserva Maxima line of cigars is a different blend than the regular Puros Indios line. Keith Myers had some incredible tasting ones for a while and some marginal ones. The only way you are going to know where it falls is to smoke it. I think some of the deals Myers has made in the past have hurt the reputations of several cigar manufacturers. I have experienced inconsistency in many cigars bought through CI/Cigarbid that are always the same when purchased retail. The difference between retail Buc Salsas and Cigarbid Buc Salsas was drastic. I digress.

I find several Puros Indios blends (Viejo, Reserva Maxima, and Cienfuegos) to be great on hot Summer days when combined with Hefeweizen (wheat beer). I don't smoke a lot of PI cigars, but I let maybe a dozen cigars age at least a year for the next summer so they are ready. When young the cigars have strong grassy/hay notes and can be aromatic and astringent. After a year of aging these flavors subside into a complex blend I find to be very enjoyable.

The Reyes family is in the process of reinventing themselves right now. The new generation is taking the reigns, and they have brought on some great talent such as Frank Santos and are releasing new lines. The cigars have always had top notch construction and frequently burn well. While some may not like the classic Puros Indios blend; brand confusion/dilution is being addressed with the new lines.

I have a couple Reserva Maxima churchills in my humi right now and Paulaner Hefeweizen in the beer crisper. I now have a plan for this 100 degree+ afternoon. :tu
