Buy a small Igloo cooler and some beads, cheap and effective.

Tampa Humidor seems a nice site, but prices are on the expensive side, IMO. You can do better.
 
The age thing is all about liability and the cigar stores covering their asses! You click on the circle that states you are over 21 and go on. You don't have to show you I.D. and no one is going to show up at your front door. At least not yet.

Has anyone ever actually had that happen? I mean, we're not talking Cubans here, and I'm legal in my state, what kind of liability are they covering for?

Secondly, a cooler and beads would work, I agree, but I want something small, maybe for 20-25 cigars, just to test the waters, see if this is my thing, ya know?

Would people pay much for used humidors, or would it just be a nice candy dish after awhile? I wouldn't expect full price on one, no, but I'm probably right in guessing quality ones are cherished/collected, right?

I'm a noob too, and can say that the Igloo/beads suggestion is the way to go. Just get a small cooler and a bead puck from cigarmony or heartfelt...way too easy :)

EB is on point. I use this thread whenever I order online. Pretty much anything I want I run through the list of sites to see who has it and who has the best price. Takes some time but saves $$$$. Sometimes it will be a big difference in price from site to site. I have ordered from several of the sites and none have ever asked for ID verification except for Holt's. They actually sent me a form to fill out and wanted a copy of my DL. Shredded that document. I have had my bank account tapped once to identity theft already. Nobody is getting a copy of my DL sent in the mail to buy smokes. Plenty of other sites out there.

As for the suggestions on smokes. Some of my favorites: Oliva V lancero (but all are awesome), and LFD double ligero Chisel.

I will definitely keep that filed away; most likely go through it tomorrow. I created a folder in Firefox of all my cigar sites, I'm going to file them eventually and go from there.

Still looking for a humidor, I'll try the sites listed. If anyone can direct me to one of those Little Havana cutters or something as good, let me know. I saw they'd been discontinued.

I know that it's been said one should order a humi at least 4x the size of what they anticipate they'll need, but I love the look of this, and the price seems decent.

Now, as for the matter of using beads, are they recommended? Are they used for serving the same purpose as a hygrometer? How's that whole aspect work, in layman's terms?

Geez, you'd never get this complex with a cigarette or a chaw, I guess that's why cigars are so appealing to so many; you can certainly make them your own and let them immerse you.

Right now you are probably overwhelmed with choices. I have the Cigar Jar from Duke City myself as it was my first humidor. I now have that in my desk drawer at work. Its pretty easy to operate because it has a nice thick seal. I'm not so sure that I would recommend this just yet as you may find better choices.

If you are new to all of this and really want to do it on the cheap, I would go for the cooler or tupperware style with a puck of beads. This will allow you to store lots of cigars on the cheap (nothing wrong with that, I have a cooler packed to the gills where I age my sticks).

If you just want to keep a dozen sticks on hand as you are still experimenting with the hobby, then the jar might be the best solution.

If you are positive that you will be smoking for a while and you are willing to monitor a humidor until you get it to steady state, then I would go for a more traditional desktop humidor. When I say monitor a humidor, I mean that during the winter when the ambient RH is low and you are not smoking frequently, you will have to open the humidor weekly to verify the humidity and add water as needed. Once I went a month without opening it. There is nothing worse than opening a humdor and seeing the hydrometer reading 50% RH.

That little number you posted looks OK, however you might be better off getting a humidor that comes stocked with cigars as you will save money. Here are some suggestions:

If so, what else would I need besides a puck? I'm guessing a hygrometer, at least for my peace of mind (as I have NO idea what the hell I'm doing, and probably couldn't tell a Cuban from a bubblegum cigar if you asked me :ss that was too corny, sorry)

Anyway, I'm looking for a small airtight cooler, really, really cheap. I've got a box of old cigar boxes (lol) I bought years ago for a craft project and never used, I'd probably layer the bottom with cedar sticks, maybe do rows if that was OK for the smokes (but I'd fear poor circulation)?

But a couple members have been nice enough to offer me some starter samplers, so at the moment, I'm just trying to save money and make this endeavor as painless as possible for a newbie.

Good stuff though, I've been reading an eBook from cheaphumidors.com, and this could prove to be a worthwhile investment if I let it be.

I'm in a similar situation in that I'm gonna be a sophomore in college (I'm 19) so I'm old enough to purchase tobacco, but not old enough to order from those sites. I didn't have any good B&M place nearby until I found this site and discovered that the Taboo cigars store is just a little drive away from my housing.

I've found that just putting 1985 as the birth date works fine. They don't check when they deliver. I've ordered quite a few times and have yet to have a problem.
 
I'd do that, but all our mail stops at the mailing center, I don't know if they *could* stop at the dorm, which is on-campus anyway...Doubt the post office is going to look hard at the packages, anyway.

True, and I'm not getting busted for tobacco I'm sure; I once ordered cigarettes for my then-17y/o cousin, and I bought 'em cheap from the Ukraine...I like to avoid being judged for doing something 'bad', so I do online when I can.

To help avoid any problems I would make sure you order from a company who ships through the USPS. I know that Cigars International and Cbid ship via UPS with adult signature required. Every once in a while I get a driver who knocks on the door to get a signature instead of leaving them on the front porch. It's conceivable that you could encounter a hard core driver who would check id. So to be safe have them shipped using the USPS. I have never had a problem with them they either leave them in my mail box or on the front porch. I know that Taboocigars.com and Seriouscigars.com use the USPS.
