Partagas Black

Snake Hips

Götterdämmerung
I opened up my humidor this evening for something new. Which isn't hard, because I haven't tried most of the cigars I have (thanks to all the BOTLs that made it happen :D). I dug and looked and pondered and compared and thought...and I settled on this oily, black beast.

Appearance is very nice. Thick, dark, maduro wrapper, fat and medium in length, no large veins, stylish band. I like a good-lookin' cigar with a handsome band.

An easy clean cut, a toast and a light and I went to sit on the porch and listen to the rain.

The first part of this cigar was PEPPER. Holy balls this thing was spicy. Like it was rolled with black peppercorns. I actually liked it - it was different. I haven't had anything of this caliber. So I fixed me a cup of chai tea, because it seemed appropriate. After the first half inch the pepper subsided substantially and it became more of a cinnamon spice - sweet n' spicy on the back of the tongue and in the throat (or is that cancer?). Earthy and woody are about what I would say it was like.

Half way through the spiciness would return a bit, and it waxed and waned until the end. The flavor maintained its basic profile through the entirety of the cigar and got to tasting a little like coffee toward the end.

I liked this cigar, because I wasn't really sure what to think about people saying cigars were "spicy" until now. Lawd a' mussy. But it was nice and flavorful, and didn't plow me into the ground with nicotine, even though I got a pretty good buzz near the end (I'm getting better with nicotine though - might be the snuff).

If you like it a little spicy and you like maduro - pick one of these up. But then again, I haven't ventured into DPG Black or Tatuaje or any of Pepin's power blends, so this might not be that spicy to some, but whatever.

Thoroughly enjoyable pick :tu

Thanks for the review. I liked the one I tried it seemed a little more spicy and full than the regular Partagas. My brother-in-law gave me a box of Partagas #4's for my birthday, 15 years ago and started me down this road to ruin. So there is a special place in my heart for the brand. Thanks again for the great review.

I think I have one of these in the cooler that I haven't tried yet. It will be interesting to note the spice & maduro flavors together. Great review :tu

One of my favorite cigars!! (seems I have more and more favorites! ;))

Thanks for the review! :tu

Great review!
You summed up exactly what I have been thinking about this cigar. It is top on my list (has been since the beginning). I order the crystal tubo box on a regular basis and smoke this cigar as a daily!! If you decide to order more I recommend the crystal tubo box. It comes with 8 cigars nicely laid in a red velvet-ish tray with a very classy looking black box. The price is not absurd either.

I enjoyed the review

I only had two that came with a box order and I absolutely loved the first one. Unfortunately the second one let me down, it was a very tight smoke that I fought all the way through. Kept trying to roll it between my fingers to loosen it up to no avail. I will have to give em another try.

these are awesome smokes at any price, especially that medio tempo wrapper from conn. Great cigar that delivers in the flavor department.

This was pretty much the cigar that turned me on to smoking.
Now I may have to revisit these. I just happen to have a couple in the cooler. :ss

Partagas black is one of my faves...my other fave "peppery" smoke is the maduro house blend from red cloud cigars in Orange, CA if you can find 'em they rock too...they are made by fuente if anyone cares...

Nice Review!

I've always liked it! One of the first cigars I had that stuck out in my mind, and made me want to have another cigar. For me, it's a great value

Thanks for the great review! This is one of my favorite smokes. I also have had some serious draw issues on these...but only every once in a while. I might need to pick up a few of these.

I've had draw problems with the Clasicos. Storing at 65% pretty much solved that problem. If I cut one that seems a bit hard on the draw, I'll dry box it for a few days. I've not had any problems with the "Bravos" when stored at 65%.

I started to type the exact same thing. Except I don't have any in the box. I guess I'll have to pick a few up soon. Boy do they need to be at lower humidity levels though. They can get spongy quickly. I suggest 62 - 64% rH max.

Thanks everyone!

I'm a little surprised at the turnout for this review - reading the forums, I never would have guessed this was a favorite for so many people. Now I'm getting confident, because I'm starting to taste what others are tasting in cigars :D

I'll most definitely check 'em out. I love the look of crystal tubo boxes, and if they're in my price range...oh boy...

Age sure does wonders with this stick. I bought a box of the Clasicos over two years ago and pretty soon I wondered why the h*ll a bought a box of these. Very strong, chemical tasting, bitter, yech!

But I fired one up tonite and it's a completely different cigar. Toasty, mildly earthy, and only of moderate strength... and no hint of bitterness. I nubbed the sucker. Good smoke.

Yep on of my FAV's....Cant go wrong with Partagas....Someone else said it, but I do from time to time get one thats a little tight...
