Review on new Zippo Blue Lighter

Please tell us more. Why don't you like your Z insert?

I've found them to be very inconsistent and seem to plug after a couple of months using them. And like I said, I've owned a good # of them and this has happened with all but about 1. That's a pretty bad ration against them.

I had one bad z-plus, but I received another one that worked fine. I am interested to see how this new zippo blu does. The Colibri flint butane ligher is complicated to work, this one seems much easier to use.

I have way too many lighters. :D

I have been thinking about getting a Butane torch lighter... I am leaning towards getting the Xikar, same lifetime guarantee except 15 dollars cheaper and no flint to worry about.

Seems like a no brainer to me..

I got a free Zippo Blu through Marlboro last week and took it with me on a business trip to try it out.

1. There is no flame adjustment on it. One size fits all and that size is large. It worked well for my cigars, but a buddy grabbed it to light his cigarette and we think he lost an eyelash or two

2. Flint system is ok. It definitely take some getting used to. The whole flint and wheel sit on a platform, which would be the butane release. The first time everyone grabbed the lighter and used it, thier finger slipped off of the platform, and they lost the lighter. Of course some guys just fumbled a little bit, but one guy took out 3 cocktails and a lamp trying to protect my free lighter.

3. Feels much heavier than my Zippo with Z-insert (which I have owner for over a year without a problem). The entire lighter is larger. (both taller and thicker)

4. Small window on the side was great. Easy to see how much fuel was left. After three days of heavy use, it still looks like its going strong without a refill.

Overall, it was a nice lighter. If you like traditional Zippo lighters, this aint it. I still love my Zippo with Z-insert. I'll be looking for these lighters around my smoking haunts to see if anyone else picked one up. I have yet to see them in retail stores in my area

I recieved mine the same way, you havent seen them in retail stores yet because they do not come out untill Aug. Yes the wheel does take some getting used to but once you get it down it works like a champ.

I don't know what people's infatuation w/ the blazer z-plus inserts. i've owned about 10 of them and they are absolute garbage.

:tpd:
If the first 9 inserts were garbage... why would you go out and purchase a 10th?

Personally, when I'm dissatisfied with a product, I stop around my first or second purchase...

Haha, but in all seriousness, I'm happy with the insert.

I think that Zippo knows there is a great nostalgia value in thier lighters and hope to keep them as close to original as possible. And perhaps they think a flint striker is more reliable than the piezo spark...no little electrode to worry about...

According to Zippo (Cigar Insider - May 22, 2007) the "best" piezo ignition has a finite life and will only last 15,000 strikes before they die. They wanted to use their reliable flint wheel system and give their lifetime guarantee.

I lost interest in these when I found out they used flint. When you're ready to light up is a poor time to find out you used the last of the flint. In all of the many butane lighters I've owned, I can only thing of one who's piezo ignition gave up the ghost. I also wonder about the flint residue being deposited on top of the burner over time and whether this might cause problems.

They'll have to be pretty good for me to loose interest in my $3.00 Walmart Ronsons (that have a click very similar to Zippo and do have a "quality" feel to them).

WyoBob

+1 to WyoBob

The Ronson JetLites are quite the cheapo lighter. They now come in some fun gunmetal colors and designs. I just love how the metal clinks so loudly when you open/close it. They are so cheap that losing one, two or ten won't set you back... I always go looking for Ronson when I'm at WalyWorld....just in case there is something new from them!

Has anyone else purchased one lately? Just curious to get some more pros and cons. I am contemplating purchasing one.

Thanks!

I've had one that I bought on e-bay 3 months ago. Works well, but occasionally fails to light on the first attempt. For the money, I prefer my Blazer!!!

:tu

I now have two (chrome and sable) and love them, but I've always been a Zippo fan. The Z insert is just not the same, this really feels and acts like a true Zippo. The flint wheel is not for everyone but I like it. I agree that sometimes they don't light on the first try but that's the only con to these lighters IMO. I still use my Blazer on boating days, but I have one of my Zippos with me any other time.

PS - If you decide to pull the trigger, go to eBay. There are a ton of 'em on there at good prices.

I got one for X-mas from the wife. I had a problem with my first one not lighting and sent it back to zippo for repair. Quick turnaround. The 2nd one seemed to have the same problem. I switched to Vector fuel and it works every time now.

The lighter seems to be picky about premium fuel. Other than that, I like it. Nice familiar zippo click with a strong single flame.

I have had one for 5 or 6 months now and it seems the more I use it, the more reliably it lights.

Thank god there is still hope, purchased a blu flame about a month ago and find it too inconsistant, also there is no flame adj. Don't leave without taking a backup. :ss
