Review: Z-Plus Torch Lighter Insert

Great reveiw, also great Lighter.I have had my Zippo for over Ten years now,and now with the new insert added,I wouldn't leave home without it.

As usual, Doc, your review was thorough and insightful!!!

I've resisted the urge to buy a fancy-pants torch lighter, simply because I can't see paying that kind of money for a headache!

But the insert sounds like a deal! I have a couple of liquid-fueled Zippos that haven't gone with me in the field... The excruciating pain of a fluid leak through the pocket and resultant crotch-fire convinced me that matches were the more prudent choice.

But this one sounds like a winner! Unless, of course, it's prone to explosion!

I have had mine for about 2 months now. I love it !! I had the same issues with it staying lit only for the first week or so. That problem seemed to resolve itself. Other seemed to enjoy it also. My neighbor got one and two or three people I work with have gotten them also. I think I paid $12 for mine at the local shop.

Since my torch recently melted it's self, and I bought a Zippo pipe lighter, I might go for one of these. Hopefully i can find them somewhere locally though.

OK Dr. Stogie Fresh, I’m taking you’re (and several others it appears) word for it! I just got a Z-Plus on Fryday (03-17-2006) and it won’t stay lit if I start it with a match!?!? I’ve followed all the ‘suggestions’ to get it to work, but no luck. I’m going back to the Cigar store I bought it from. They were very cool, and Lord knows I NEED a tobacconist… Wish me luck. I’ve always loved Zippos and have at least a dozen.

I’ll report back w/ my findings. Was it just a fluke, are my standards too high, or do all of you own stock in this outfit???

VinnDog.

ps If you've read this far, I send you my questionable Z-Plus for a 'ring-nod'. Wink-wink, nod-nod.

OK, OK, You all were right!! I went back to cigarznmore are not only did they replace my Z-Plus (and it works great), they gave me a cup of coffee, some humidifier solution, and a 'Habano Reserve' of some sort (I don't have it with me, and my memory... well, you know.) We chatted for a while and they (husband & wife) dialed me in TOTALLY!!! I got $20+ worth of stuff for 'returning' a $12.99 lighter...

I LOVE THIS STUFF!! Cigar people=Good people!!:D

Whoa VinnDog! You da man. Scored big on the return. All's well that ends well.

I have a Z-Plus in my lighter collection for about a year and its been as reliable as a Blazer PB-207 thus far.

I did my usual flame height adjuster mod on it though, I wasn't happy with the initial stop point on it. Just slide that white plastic triangle stopper off the dial, find an acceptable max flame height, then replace the stopper.

Smokers and gun owners are among the friendliest folk on the planet, contrary to how they are portrayed in the media.

Matt, I just want to say what a simple and cool modification this is. I have modified my other lighters, but didn't have enough experience with the Z-Plus to have figured it out. I modified mine today using your technique. Bingo! How cool.

Nice work dude.

Matt... Thanks for the tip! I finally came out of the stone age and popped for one today... Should be here by mid-week (along with a few sticks)... With the benefit of your advice, I'll give it a tune-up, if necessary.

Doc... You nailed another one!

The insert arrived yesterday... It performs flawlessly!
That's great. I really love mine and am using it more and more. Especially since I fine tuned the flame using txmatt's tip. Just use a small screw driver to pop that white plastic triangle stopper off the dial, then use the screwdriver to adjust the flame adjust screw to find an optimal flame height, then replace the stopper. I replace the stopper so it points in the middle so I can still raise the flame further if I want to. Enjoy.

If you must have a zippo, this is an option... Just don't have it in your back pocket when you sit down like I did because you'll here a snapping sound that kind of compromises its structural integrity.

Ive got one of those in with Jack Daniels on it instead of Harley. (i can afford JD most the time...harley aint ever gonna be in the budget)

I have not yet purchased a Z-plus. Still using my Space 6. I think my next lighter is gonna be the PB-207 that Txmatt talks about all the time.

I just bought one of these after reading this thread and it works great. Wish I found out about this a long time ago, as I've missed not being able to use my Zippo for lighting cigars. Not a problem anymore with the Z-Plus!!! :w

Even if your local place doesn't have them, eBay has plenty. Got mine off of eBay for $12.50 plus shipping.

You GOTTA get one!!!

Great lighter inserts for sure! It might have been said already, but nothing ruins a great lighter faster than crappy Ronson butane. Use Vector or something along those lines and it'll last forever.

May want to check out Famous Smoke Shop ($9.95)... I bought one there, along with a box of cigars with the "Free Shipping" tagline... No shipping charge for either the twigs or the lighter.
