The three C's.

I'm very curious what your criteria is for cold weather vs. warm weather and indoor vs. outdoor. Is it solely based on RG and length or other factors?

These and other factors. In cold weather, I tend to avoid Cameroon wrappers, particularly when wrapping a Fuente product. The cold and dry conditions here in Nebraska almost invite a Cameroon wrapped Fuente to explode. As long as the temp is not too cold, I will smoke a Montecristo Afrique. I particularly like this cigar in cool to reasonably cold weather since I will drink coffee or hot chocolate with it. BTW - the Afrique is Cameroon wrapped, but sturdier than the Fuente.

Cold weather will also dictate a shorter smoke for me. I usually reserve longer cigars like Churchills and Double Coronas for warmer conditions.

Indoors, during warm and humid weather, few things beat a Fuente. A sultry Summer night with minimum wind and 70% humidity is the perfect environment for a Don Carlos or an 858. A Davidoff works well in these conditions, too. For that matter, a Davidoff works in nearly any condition, but I prefer to smoke these when I am comfortable and can pay attention to the cigar.

Back to cold weather and outdoors - it is hard to beat a Punch. These smoke well in humidity ranges from 10% all the way to raining. In cold weather I like the London Club and Rothschild. As it gets warmer, an After Dinner works fine. Indoors at a cigar bar, a Punch Monarca or Davidoff Anniversario is just the ticket. Dunhills work here, too.

I have been experimenting with a lot of Pepins lately. These hold together pretty well in cold weather, but the burn can get funky with any air flow. A 601 outdoors at 70 Deg F and 70%+ RH is quite a treat. Smokes like a squadron of destroyers laying a smoke screen.

I hope this answers your question. I put a lot of thought into what I am going to smoke; perhaps too much. My friends tell me that I am so anal retentive that I must have been potty trained at gun point. To me, it is just part of the magic of cigar smoking. I think Zino Davidoff had it right.

Whoa that is some fascinating stuff. I've never given any thought to the ambient conditions in selecting a cigar. Thanks for sharing.

For me it's:

Sobriety- Will I be drunk or heavily drinking (if so, a dominican is in order)
Time- how long will I have to enjoy it
Hunger level- The fuller my stomach, the stronger the smoke

circumstance this is the biggest factor for me. I smoke fewer cigars in the winter and they are all inside at my local cigar lounge. this is a very sweet place to smoke because there is no wind to effect burn and waoff the smoke away. Also there is usally good company to smoke with. In this case I will usually pull out a Habanos or a super Premium NC. In the summer I am usually outsde on the patio. I smoke a lot more cigars here. If I am sitting playing cribbage with the wife I will pull something out of my NC humi.. If there is a breeze it wont be anything special. For some reason I chose Sunday nights to wind down with a "special occasion cigar" and mentally prepare for the week. 4th of July week, the gloves come off and my humidor gets raped!!! Oh and then of course there are Golf gars..

I agree with you 100% about the three C's.. I, unfortunately, don't have any close friends to share cigars with. They will, from time to time have a smoke with me, but usually complain about how harsh the smoke is (no matter how mild, or what type I gift them). So my cigar smoking is almost always a lone experience. On a walk with my dog, or outside reading a book. My girlfriend will go on the walk sometime, but that isn't the same as sharing one. Knowing that I am going it solo I will usually pick something small, about 30min. When the time comes and my brother comes back from the Army I usually have a huge double corona or something waiting for us. He loves a good cigar and there is NOTHING I love more than to sit with him, each with beer in hand, and chat and smoke for however many hours the great cigar god of that particular stick gives us. I know that every time he is here and we sit down for a chat/smoke/drink I always hate to see the end. There is something special about the conversation a cigar will bring out in people.

Played out again a couple weeks ago. Friday night Tom, Jeff and I smoked the last of the Partags 98 898V's from the box we cracked at SH I while watching the sunset. Cigars just don't taste any better.

My ultimate example. :)

The cigars themselves are the least important to me. Circumstances and company may dictate (The above C’s) the cigars chosen to smoke but hell I like em all. (You know what kind) Any cigars shared and enjoyed with friends become the placeholders for fond memories.

Been saying it for a long time buddy, "It' really isn't about the cigars" I have been floored by people close by or that will FLY from back east :tu and around the World that stop by and have a cigar with me. Keeps me humble...

I think that is a glorious example of what this hobby/lifestyle is all about. congrats to the three of you and here is to hoping you all will share many more together.:tu

I gotta say that I enjoy smoking alone. It definitely does not get any better (for me) than to enjoy a cigar or four with some great friends, but there are many times when a cigar by myself out on the porch or in the garage is just what I need to unwind and relax. Maybe since I've got two fairly young kids I appreciate the solitude a little more :) I've also always been sort of a loner, so smoking alone feels pretty natural to me.

I have three small children and a wife. So going outside alone w/ a cigar and some peace and quiet is pure bliss.:tu

Nice. Thanks for reviving this thread when you did, DaKlugs; the timing was perfect for me. And thanks to all who added their thoughts to this thread.

I've mostly smoked my pipes alone over the years - probably 90% of the time (or more). Lately I've smoked pipes with my good friend and just recently started smoking cigars. I'm so new to cigars it's probably hard to fathom - I smoked my second good cigar just now! I've come to enjoy good company when smoking and may just hold off on solitary smoking for a while and stick to smoking in good company. Can't wait to share some of my new-bought cigars with my bud which, I'm coming to realize, is a predominant feeling here at CS - sharing the goods.

Thoughtful posts for a habitual lone-smoker to consider. Thanks!
