When do you restrict your smoking?

I remember reading a quote once (maybe it was Arturo Fuente himself) that said "Cigar smoking is a hobby, not a habit."

I smoke cigars because I like to, and I've never experienced any of the cravings and irritability that my cigarette-smoking friends seem to experience. The only "addiction" aspect of it, for me, is the spending and shopping part. I can spend hours looking through catalogs and at websites, trying to find the next new perfect lighter, cutter, humidor, case, etc.

I'm still fairly new to the hobby, and have not found one absolute favorite yet. I'm still playing around with sampler packs from various vendors.

My top three so far are:
  • Cohiba Xtra Vigoroso
  • La Gloria Cubana Series R #6 Maduro
  • Rocky Patel Sungrown
I have had stretches when I've gone 6 weeks or more without smoking, then had six cigars over a weekend; usually 2 each on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

As my profile says, I am a trained opera singer. I know plenty of singers who smoke, but most of us don't smoke when we're in a period of rehearsal or performance. I just had an audition last night, and I have to go back for a call back next week, so I'm kind of kicking myself, thinking, "Aw man, I probably shouldn't even buy some more cigars because I won't even be able to enjoy them until this gig is over."

Also, because I'm inexperienced, I sometimes smoke incorrectly and inhale too deeply and wind up with a cough for a day or so.

So, my fellow gorillas, in what situations would you tell yourselves "I'm intentionally not going to smoke for a while?"

Also, did I read correctly that you inhale?

I don't cigarette-style inhale, at least not on purpose. I have mistakenly inhaled into my lungs a few times, and in my case, it hurt like a son of a gun, and I was coughing terribly for a few minutes. The cough was so bad that it created a lot of throat irritation that gave me a nasty tickling cough for a day or two afterwards.

When my parents happen to show up....I gotta tuck everything away.
You see..they are in the medical profession and have gone a bit ballistic in the past when they could smell the awesome aroma on my clothing.

I feel you on that one, man. My mom's a nurse, so I have a similar situation.

During illness, sinus headaches mainly.

:tpd:

So right now. It's brutal because the weather is so nice finally, and I just got some boxes I want to try out. Also it's end of the semester, but that has nothing to do with cigars.

I find myself craving a cigar not for the nicotine fix, but because I get to just chill out for an hour+. I crave that not the nicotine.

. . .

Aside from being in a coma ( :D ) - the only situation that I would intentionally not smoke for awhile would be: standing in vat of naphtha, gasoline, acetone, etc etc. Otherwise I think I'm good to go -

Just curious! Why switch from pipe to cigars?

I won't smoke cigars as often; for one, don't have the cash to do so, 2nd, it's easy to put the pipe down and relight without a change in the taste; 3rd, I've got some serious tongue bite right now from the pipe:pp

I usually refrain during two times-when I'm sick with a head or chest cold and when I'm volunteering for Boy Scouts. Our camp does not allow smoking and while many of the cigarette smokers "sneak" one behind the dining hall, it's the rule and I try to set the example and follow it.

I often don't smoke because there is often no convenient place or time for me to smoke. I can't smoke in the house, and being cold outside takes away any enjoyment for me, so I'd rather stay in and warm with no cigar than freeze and shivver with one.

Also, between feeding the kids, putting them to bed, getting some dinner in me, trying to get a bit of exercise in, it's often pretty late for an hour plus cigar for me. I guess I end up restricting based on time and convenience.

I restrict my smoking when I am in airports or don't have anything to smoke (the second hasn't happened in a while)
