Zippos and stogies?

I am a collector of zippo's...and have 55 to my name. So my main light is a zippo. I do own some colibri's and such but I love my zippos. The key to not ruining a cigar lit with a zippo I was told is after your smoke is properly lit to gently blow through your smoke with the end still pointing towards the flame. What this does is purges the cigar of trapped tars and gasses to clean the smoke. Your flame may flare up while purging. Now granted this may not be a 100% way of removing some of the fluids fouling but my good smokes still taste good. And this works with any cigar you are smoking no matter what the fire source. If you want to refresh halfway through, go for a relight and a purge....I bet you will notice a difference.

I've just got the zippo insert. I like the torch alot however the fuel reservoir on that is so tiny. It runs out of fuel after just two or three smokes.

It's nice to have the zippo case with the torch style lighter but I'm not sure it's the best real solution as a lightert it takes too much maintenance fo rme.

ever tried the zippo blu? its rater nicel. You still get the wonderful click noise but it uses strictly butane and has a rater large tank.

Never tried the zippo approach, i don't own one.

I prefer wood matches to anything else, but when I'm looking for a light, the Ronson JetLite is the way to rock it. under $3...just make sure you buy the fuel refill!

When I'm home, it's either a Zippo or Zippo Blu for me. I never have a problem with poor taste when using the classic Zippo. Of course, my cigar never touches the flame, instead hovering above it.

I still like my Zippo and haven't noticed any 'foul' taste from using it. But it can be a pain using the Zippo outside on a windy day.

I have two old Zippo's from my cig days, I have tried using them a couple times on cigars mostly cuz I just love the old schoolness of a Zippo.

Having said that, I thought it ruined the taste of the cigar, I can taste the fuel on the light and whether psychosomatic or not I think I can taste it throughout the smoke.

To me it is a no go

I like the zippo but I am still new at this. it's worked for me with no issues. enjoy
With the new zippo fuel, my feeling is that the odor and taste factor is over rated. My problem with using a Zippo outside is that the flame is too hard to control in a wind. I end up burning myself before the cigar is lit due to the flame blowing all over the place.

I'm using my John Wayne Zippo for sticks and pipes. Not having any problems with the odor. I have also heard about letting it burn for a few seconds before lighting anything so I do it out of habit now. I will be purchasing a torch soon though.

I used a Zippo to light a cigar once. The lighter fuel give it a terrible taste. I'm pretty much a match guy, unless I'm in the car.

My GF bought me a zippo for my birthday a couple of years ago.

Depite hearing that you should never use a zippo to light cigars, I had to use it as that's what she bought it for.

I can honestly say that I can't taste the lighter fuel in my cigars, and to me there is no difference in taste if I use the zippo or a regular butane lighter.

I believe it is all in personal preferance. I find nothing wrong with using what you like. Some people can"taste" the fuel and some dont notice a thing. It comes down to doing what you like. That is why we smoke cigars, to relax not to worry what some say about certain lighters.

I'm going to retract my post above.

After using butane for a while now there IS a difference.

It's subtle, but it's there, and once you notice it, it's obvious.

So for me, I say don't use a regular zippo - you CAN taste the fuel.

I use matches at home, and a Zippo Blu when I'm out. I love my Zippo Blu. I've heard a lot of complaints on Cigar Forums because of the flint wheel, and in all honesty it cracks me up. Changing a flint out is probably the simplest and least time consuming part of the entire hobby.

As for a classic zippo, I tend to taste the fluid but have/will use one if I'm out of fire and a friend offers. "Any port in a storm" as the saying goes.

Smoke what you like, when you like, and how you like!

:ss

The thing about liquid fuel lighters is that they impregnate yer stick with the flavor of the fuel. Therefore, in order to fully appreciate the taste of yer cigar, ye should light with wooden matches (let the phosphorous burn before), a light piece of cedar, or butane lighters.

I'm really intrigued by that Zippo insert but I have a question or two. Reading through the thread, I saw a mention of maintenance needs and small fuel capacity. For those that have them, how many sticks do you think I could get out of each filling, and do they really require all that much maintenance? I have an old Zippo I'm awfully fond of that I would like to bring on board with this hobby of mine.
