Zippos and stogies?

My wife gave me an engraved zippo for my birthday recently. I have lighted all of my cigars with butane or matches previously. I cannot tell a difference in the taste of cigars lit with the zippo. I don't have a distinguished palette anyway, so YMMV.

I just spoke with a Zippo Rep at my B&M today. He told me that new Zippo fuel (released after the 75th Anniversary fuel) is made for cigars. IThe fuel was reformulated so it doesn't leave an aftertaste of lighter fluid. I picked up some, so we'll see. Great news if it works. I love Zippo's. :tu

My girlfriend gave me a zippo recently too, and she was very disappointed when I told her that I would rather not light my cigars with it. Still in its original packaging and accompanied by a full bottle of fuel.

If I can get a torch insert, then this would avoid her disappointment of my returning her present.

Which torch insert is considered the best, particularly in regards to fuel consumption?

The only insert which I could find is called Z-plus. Bought it yesterday at JJ Fox in Selfridges with Colibri fuel, which I guess is considered decent fuel. However, after working fine all day yesterday, it seized to function today already... Have to go exchange it.

I like torches because they easily correct a poor burn. Other than that, I use a Zippo from time to time and have no worries. I always let it burn for a couple seconds and try to not let the flame touch the cigar (only toasting the foot as I rotate).

:ss

Does the z-plus use a flint, or is it "electronic ignition"?

The Z-plus uses electronic quartz ignition. In the case of my faulty insert, I do not think that the ignition is the culprit as the spark is clearly visible. However, the gas jet doesn't flow steadily. I'll exchange it tomorrow and hope the replacement Z-plus fares better.

My Z-flame was actually not faulty. The real problem was my not knowing how to refill it. With Selfridges' good customer service they exchanged it regardless, and their sales clerk showed me how to refill the new unit properly: apparently you have to vacate the gas chamber completely before every refill, otherwise air pockets can be trapped inside the gas chamber which will prevent the flow of the gas. I love this modified Zippo which came just in time for the London herf. :ss

Just refilled it again, and still works without problems.

I love my Zippo. Even though we don't do it anymore, they were the traditional way to light off the boilers of the U.S. fleet until the advent of gas turbine engines. The boilerman or mechanic would take out his Zippo (personalized, of course) and use it to light a starting rag, which was then hurled in to ignite the boiler. From the mighty battleship to the lowly fleet re-supply ship, it was an engineering tradition. Gawd help him if he didn't use a official Made in USA Zippo!

I have my brass Zippo from my first deployment. It was actually from our best playmate, a 20+ yr old Oliver Hazard Perry class frigate, because our ship Zippo wasn't all that nice (enamel vs engraved from the OHP). It is still is on the original flint and works great!

I've tried the Z-plus insert for Zippos and wasn't impressed.
