Are the opus x's worth it?

I love that quote rottenzombie! I have been a opus whore for a long time. To whomever thinks they aren't worth the money needs to smoke one with 5-7 yrs on it then tell me what you think. BTW yes this one is from 2000. I gifted this one to a buddy and the joy came when he said it was best cigar he had had in his life and thanked me for the experience.

I've smoked one Opus X and it was not very good to me price aside. It may have really been because after all the hype I was expecting soemthing fabulous like a genie to come out of the smoke and give me a beer and offer her mind bendingly nubile body to calm me before I got my three wishes. When none of this happened I was understandably upset. Not only that I was still fairly young in my cigar career and it was both too powerful for me and in my opinion tasted awful.
:r this is so true- I have not tried many hyped cigars but the ones I have tried I always am sort of disappointed no matter how good it is because like you said that genie never popped out. Its just tough to enjoy a 20 plus dollar cigar for me because the expectations are always so high and really I can't imagine anything in a cigar that would really make it worth that much.
I've always gone back to my car analogy- its kinda like a 1967 Camaro (my favorite car btw). An all original, matching numbers 67 with everything in show condition is going to be several hundred thousand dollars. A restored 67 in show condition can be had for a fraction of that but is essentially the same car- oftentimes its better and nicer in many ways but its just not original. Some people like that idea of originality and some don't care all that much as long as they have the sweet ride. :2

Subjective question. I like them at MSRP, I won't buy them from my B&M. It's a very good smoke.
 
If you're only doing it once, I think it's worth it, even at a higher price than MSRP because then you at least know what its like and it is quite good IMHO. That's what happened to me. Now I'm constantly on the hunt for it at MSRP. :ss
 
It might be worth it just to try and see how you like them.

Exactly what I have to say. I've smoked 3 Opuses, and I can say I wouldn't spend over $20 for one (save the football or some oddity). They are good, and I do like them. Hell, I don't mind the $11-$15 it costs once in a while to enjoy one.

But if the internet seems to be the only way you can get some, I think $20 on a stick or two is justified. How else will you know whether or not you like one of the most talked about cigars?

Oh, FYI, I'm sure you could pick some up in the WTT/WTB forums for less than $20. Probably more than MSRP, but less than $20.
 
It's worth it just to try one. I bought one for 20.00 from a local B&M a while back and they are great smokes. The next time that I drop that kind of cash on one stick it won't be and NC.
 
go ahead and try one... cant hurt to try it, maybe you will love them, maybe not... i think they are alright!!!

by the way... they may knock you on your a$$:ss
 
At MSRP....maybe.

At $20 a pop...I vote no.

I just smoked one of these tonight (one of three cigars total, added the FFOX due to this thread). I have smoked cigars from pretty much everywhere. and I have a varied palette as a result. Here are my thoughts:

Positives:
If you have never tasted a citrus flavor in a cigar, the FFOX will provide it in quantity;
Very strong in flavor and nicotine;
No nasty bitterness or metallic tastes;
A unique "twang";
Dominican puro;
Age well!

Negatives:
High Price;
Iffy burn / burn issues (known problem);
Strength!

Overall, I think they are a great cigar at MSRP. But it has to be smoked in the right environment (after dinner and drinks). These smokes burn for a LONG time, you can get away with a perfexcion #5 and smoke it for an hour. Start with a cheaper one, around MSRP, and work your way up. PM me if you cant find a source.

Personally, I would not pay more than 1.00 over MSRP (allowing for a small 1.00 B&M markup)
 
I have a couple in my humi that I never got around to smoking;
they are new so I'm planning to age them for a year or two...
if I can stand not smoking them for that long.

I'll let you know then if they are worth it or not.

I keep reading about Opus X and hear people ranting about them, I wondered which is the best smoke to get? I understand they come in a variety and wondered what everyone recommends? I think my local B&M has them, I recognized the logo when I saw it. I'll have to check, but first wanted to see which one to buy if they have them?
 
I love em but only at msrp although I did spend 150 for 6 opus x A's and 200 for the 9-11 twin tower edition signed by fuente.

I tend to like the smaller ring guage ones. My favorites in order:

  • xXx "Power Ranger"
I scored 2 of the 3 pack tins of Perfecion X at retail last week; I'm a happy camper!

Your preference could be altogether different though.. You tend to get more wrapper flavor in the thinner RG cigar and that is why I believe I prefer the thin ones in this line..
 
spoke with a fellow botl a few days back and he summed it up perfectly; and i concur with what he said. When he smoked his first OPUS it was uneventful its not like you will hear angels sing. it's a decent cigar that is very well marketed.
